We got VDSL about a month ago and are enjoying the speed increase.

While the stats look great I am less than happy with the noticible delay when I open up a page. Initially I thought it was the wireless so I put the router (Telecom supplied) onto channel 6.

Here are my modem stats - should I experience a delay when I open sites? On a speedtest I am seeing 42ms pings, which seems on the high side to me

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Attenuation of 14 is high for VDSL which is going to make it hard to get to DLM1.

Your current DLM profile is currently adding 16ms and there is really nothing you can do unless you can improve your line.

FYI we've just moved from VDSL to fibre and webpages load lightning fast, a noticeable improvement on VDSL even on DLM1

what are your error rates looking like? chances are that is why your not hitting DLM-1, not your attention..

My understanding is higher attenuation will likely mean lower sync (less bitloading particularly at higher frequencies) but yeah, I'd say actual error rates, particular CRC, are a better indicator of what the issue might be with DLM. Also try not to restart your modem at all. Just leave it - if your error rates are lowish DLM should reduce the interleaving and you'll see better latencies (BTW My attenuation is 12 and I'm on DLM1 and there are others with higher also on DLM1... )

If web page loading is slow, that amount of latency introduced by interleaving is not noticeable.
Generally that level of latency is only noticeable if you're gaming or using a voip/video service such as skype.

Can you provide a little more information on exactly what is slow? Is it just certain websites? Does domestic / international sites make a difference?
What do you get for speed at http://www.telecom.co.nz/internet/existingcustomers/overview/testyourspeed/ ?

Which DNS servers are you using?

Noticeably slow page loading would suggest high packet loss to me.... 40ms is not significant enough to notice for simple page load times, which are usually on several orders of magnitude larger than that.

My speedtests to the Telecom speedtest server give me close to what the modem reports. Especially when the teenager isn't at home. I just got 35mb/8.7mb and 44ms ping.

My DNS servers are: 122.57.237.1 and 210.55.111.1 which is how the modem came.

Overseas sites are slower than local sites. But both seem to take a second or two longer than they did previously. FB takes a good 5 seconds to load the first image in my timeline and it takes at least 10 seconds for the stream on the right to populate.
