I've be excitedly watching Chrous putting/installing a new box down the road (this Aug) to replace the Colkin (? spelling) box.

But I am a little nervous as what to expect for speed. Currently it isn't uncommon to see download speeds of 385 KB/Sec (which is about 70% of the day, until a little traffic congestion around 6-10pm). Which can be a pain sometimes, but overall is pretty good speed for where we are.

The thing that is making me a little worried is according to the Chorus network upgrade map ----- is saying for my address ------ "RBI Broadband > 1 Mbps by Sep-2013". Am I to expect slower speeds? vs using the old Colkin.

According to my modem stats, the line is capable of

But had always been limited to around 385 KB/sec due to the Colkin's limitations.

Just really worried about that 1 Mbps figure (I know it says greater, but was hoping they would have said 5 Mbps area instead). What should I expect or brace myself for?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Whey they swap you over to a ISAM, normally your speeds should increase to the line speed.  And you will be connecting at ADSL2 rather than 1 (depending on your modem).

You shouldn't have any more congestion during peak times either.

This may be the point that you would look at getting a Splitter / Master Filter due to your distance from the Exchange/ISAM to get the best out of your line.

Only good things occur when a Conklin gets removed :)

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I do plan on getting doing the whole Splitter and Master Filter once everything changes over. Or is it better advised to get them done before?

Another question - Will I have to call up (telecom) and ask them to do anything to my plan or activate it or does it all happen automatically?

Cheers

It all happens automagically in the background.

Normally you will notice that you connect at ADSL2 but your speeds don't increase, this is once Chorus have put you onto the new ISAM.

Then once Chorus has finished all the migration they notify Telecom (and all other RSPs who have customers on the ISAM) that the commissioning is complete. Then it's up to the RSP to migrate them onto the correct profile / plan.  With Telecom this typically happens 2-3 days after the ISAM is commissioning is complete other RSPs it can take longer.

I have actually hit the max speed the line says it connects at (when doing downloads...near 7616 Kpbs). Just wondering if the master filter will change what the line speed indicates @ 7616 Kpbs to a higher number (?).

Regardless we still planning to get Master Filter installed eventually.

Also wondering - Should I see a better ping to North America now? On the Conklin the ping was usually 280-320 ms. Should this improve as well?

Azzura, while a master filter is never a bad thing, 7616 is the maximum ADSL1 speed with a 12db noise margin.

While it's possible that you're achieving precisely that connect rate for a different reason, it's very unlikely. In this circumstance a master filter will not help you get any faster while you're stuck on ADSL1.

So therefore something is restricting you to ADSL1 sync speeds. This will either be your modem, or the Chorus DSLAM. It's very common when a cabinet is installed to cut everyone over to the cabinet, and leave them all on ADSL1 profiles for a period of time to sort out any issues, and then open the floodgates and let everyone connect at ADSL2+.

If you PM me your line number I can check the profile on the Chorus end and advise if it is still set to ADSL1. If that is the case, then it's up to Chorus as to when they make that change. It's usually not a couple of days, it's more like weeks - but I don't have any firm figures on how long they leave this.
