I'm surprised that NBR has broken this and no one has commented about it on here..

With a new Ultra Mobile postpaid mobile plans, customers can now use their landline for broadband, only if it’s on the same account as their mobile. Once they’ve selected from the 80GB, 150GB or 500GB home broadband package, Telecom will then simply disable all inbound and outbound calls from the landline (except 111) and provide a $30 month account credit.


That confuses the hell out of me.

Are they saying a POTS line will still be provisioned but be disabled? DAFAQ?!

Yup.

You will technically have a working POTs line and it will be able to call 111, 123, 120, 126, etc. However it cannot receive calls and you cannot call out except the aforementioned numbers.

Considering the installed base of wires, that makes good sense. I doubt there will be many new installs of POTS vs the activation and restriction of existing ones...

Interesting this is a slight variation on TelstraClear's old naked broadband prop - in UCLL area, Naked Broadband was installed with a functioning phone service, but all calls (not just 111) were charged for. For the odd 1 or 2 times someone needed to make a call....

I guess the way I see it is that if I was Mr Telecom I would be pushing people away from the NEAX and on to my fancy new Broadsoft.

But then again I guess they did spend a bunch of cash over hauling those NEAXs. Still would of thought it would make sense to shift at least a small amount of people across to a VoIP product and start figuring a process for that.

They pay the same to chorus whether they buy pstn or not, so given that most people taking this up will have an existing landline, it's probably cheaper to just apply a toll bar rather than pay chorus to disconnect the pstn.

Surprised they stopped inbound calls too. Seems like that would have been a nice value add for students etc who have parents that like to call them on a landline.

Yay!! I'll take that $30 saving, it bugs me paying for a service I dont really use, telecom will most likely get their money back from me in the way of a larger data or mobile plan so is a win win

I believe that the NEAX switches are being upgraded to do VOIP..

I saw the article this morning on Stuff.  Pity you have to have a post paid cell fone plan as well..

"Spokeswoman Holly Wilkinson said naked DSL would be offered to those Telecom customers who had a post-paid mobile account with Telecom on one of its "Ultra Mobile" plans and a broadband plan with at least 80 gigabytes of data."

So no do  Onebill and $19 cell plans?

I believe that the phone line is provided "for free" on UFB plans; i.e. you'd be paying the same price even if you didn't have one.

That's true, but it's no different for VDSL. Both are marketed as a 'home package' at the same price points.

Did you read the article?

NBR: The first Telecom naked plans are for copper broadband only. A naked option for UFB fibre will follow in the new year.

I think the answer to your question, is 'Yes, Telecom still uses ICMS'.  I'm not familiar with the solution for Naked here and could not tell you if it uses a real phone number or a fictitious number.  Whatever the number is, more than likely it will appear on the phone bill.  The Broadband inventory is associated with the line number.

We do still have to use a real line number and customers will be provided this as a reference for their connection, and it will indeed appear on the bill.

No one bill plans (which include the $19 plan) do not qualify.
