Hi There,

I've had a Telecom UFB 100/50 for about 8 months now. When it was first installed I was getting a Ping test of around 7ms on Speedtest.net to the Auckland telecom server. In the last few months it has gone up to 32ms??

When I do a speed test to Sydney its 32ms

Is this just me or is this normal?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Hmmm. May need to get Taiket to comment on this one. Are you constantly getting that much latency, or does it fluctuate?

Hi there, it hasn't been below 30ms for a few months. And when I do a speediest from my iPhone on the telecom 4g network I get a test result of 19ms. So somthing just doesn't seem right at home.

Just did a speedtest to the AKL Telecom server, got 5ms Ping.

29ms to Telstra and 30ms to Intenode server's in SYD. On Telecom UFB 100/50

As another point of comparison, I'm on ADSL in Wellington, and I get 19ms to the Auckland server, and 7ms to the Wellington server.

Going off that it looks like your latency is fine. 6ms to TM.
Probably some small routing issue/possible congestion/weirdness to the telecom speedtest server there.

is this only in speedtests that your getting an increase in latency?

its not uncommon for a underpowered or heavily inuse computer to "lag" in flash based ping tests.

I am also in Parnell, and also use Telecom as my ISP. I also have a Technicolor VDSL Router.

My typical Ping to Telecom Auckland using Speedtest.net varies from 4ms to 7ms (since installation several months ago - was about 30ms when I was on ADSL). Downloads typically vary from around 28 to 34 Mb/s and uploads are around 9.5 Mb/s. My desktop machine is connected to the router by Ethernet cable.

I am located near to the Rose Gardens.

That was over wifi though right? Shouldn't be 2ms to your local router. In saying that though your latency to trademe is very good.

I just noticed something in your posted speed test in your originating post above (apart from the unbelievably impressive speeds!).

Why does it show the distance to Auckland as ~300mi (presumably miles away)? After all, if you are in Parnell, I would expect it to read as mine does in my earlier post above... <50mi.

I wonder if this is the cause - you are not reaching the test server directly??
