Hey, my broadband has been running quite slow the past few days. Speedtest shows average of 4.5Mbps download speed.
I've restarted my modem multiple times but it hasn't changed much. Currently sitting on about 5.4Mbps.
I used to get at least 11Mbps.
Does anyone know why this would have suddenly changed? Would this be a isp or modem fault?
My isp is spark, im on the adsl 150gb plan and live in Wellington.

Modem stats are below if that helps
ADSL
Type Interleave Path
Status SHOWTIME

Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps)
6372Kb 392Kb
Noise Margin
12 10
Output power(dBm)
122 178
Attenuation(dB)
29 14

Cheers

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Speedtest is consistent with the sync rate, so any issue is likely to be a physical wiring fault.

Have you done an isolation test as per PeterReader's post?

Sorry i'm not sure what you mean by isolation?
I've restarted the modem multiple times. Removed all devices from the phone jack. I've also plugged the modem directly into the phone jack...with no real change.
After numerous restarts the modem stats now show 8613Kb which is a slight improvement, but not back to where it previously was.
Could this still be a line fault?
Cheers

Your downstream attenuation of 27db suggests a line length of aprx. 2km with a maximum ADSL2+ speed of 17000 kbps. (throughput 15000 kbps)
(bits, not bytes)

your low upstream and varable rates across board, would infer a internal wiring issue as others have pointed out.

have a master filter installed and you will likely see consistency and higher rates return.

The connection has dropped again after resetting itself.
If i call Spark will they be able to confirm 100% that my internal wiring is the issue?
And how much would i be looking at to install a master filter? Will some of this be covered under that 'wiring maintenance' fee that i pay monthly?

Thanks for all your help!

Have a read of PeterReader's post above, and the linked post [urlhttp://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=27834[/url] that explains an isolation test.

Basically, you are trying to isolate various bits of your internal wiring to rule out (isolate) them as being a problem.

your connection is resyncing because it cant hold up at the higher rates.

not a doubt at all, a master filter will improve things, and allows for internal issue to be less likely if it does not turn out to be the case.

there may be a geekzoner near you who could do it cheap for you..

Oh i've already done that. Connected the modem directly to the wall jack and I removed the filter and phone from the connection. But there was no real change...

Yep i live in Wellington.
I just did some searching...would i be better off getting VDSL installed as it appears installation for that comes with a master splitter too?
I was hoping to get UFB but sadly it's not available in my area until April 2015 :(

VDSL needs an even shorter distance than ADSL. Someone said earlier your line distance was about 2kms (at a guess). If that's accurate, forget VDSL and wait for fibre.

Can you get Vodafone cable? You might want to check that out.
