Telecom has lowered its WAP charges for off-net browsing by 80%. Its a big step in the right direction. Id like to see it go further, but at the very least now, I would consider using my Sanyo M1 to check my domain email account via WAP.

Good move...

Will this make you use WAP more? Or is it still too expensive?

I agree that this is a step in the positive direction, but it is still incredibly over priced.

both telecom and vodafone have stupidly expensive data charges.

Kinda related but since the change to yahoo bubble using my mobile to check emails has gone a tad (translated to mean extremely) expensive.

Prior to the upgrade I used my prepaid Samsung W531 to check what emails were available and if I chose to read them it would cost me 35c per email. Now it is measured per kB so to even see what emails are there cost a lot lot more.

Will the price drop make a difference to my issue?

Why do people keep repeating this when it's completely untrue? Vodafone's plans offering 6GB of mobile data for $90 per month or $80 per month on a plan is exceptionally good value. It represents some of the best value for mobile data in the world.

I do agree that their lowend plans are a mess however. I see no reason why Vodafone can't offer a decent rate cap (even upwards of 50MB) for the base $10 per month data plan. From a business sence dropping the casual data rate from $10 per MB makes no sence (just like casual SMS rates stay at 20c) but offering 3MB for $10 is a joke compared to the higher plans.

Sbiddle I think you misunderstand what is being discussed here. WAP charges are fixed, previously they were 5c per KB, now they are 1c per KB. What you are referring to is mobile data plans, which apply when you use your mobile or datacard to connect to the actual internet and use it as a modem. Mobile data plans do not affect the price of using WAP. Nothing does.

At the old rate of 5c per KB, this equated to $51.20 per MB or $52,428.80 per GB.

Now that WAP is set to 1c per KB, you are looking at $10.24 per MB or $10,485.76 per GB.

That is stupid money whatever way you look at it!

$10.24 per MB or $10,485.76 per GB - That's an insane amount of money to pay for that amount of Data how stupid.

What does Vodafone charge for equivalent amount of data, $11.25MB on a casual plan, or $11.25 on a 3MB Plan?

Vodafone is actually more expensive than Telecom if you are on a casual plan according to their Vodafone Data Plans page.

While we all agree Telecom's $10.24 per MB is excessive, Vodafone charges $11.25.

Now that we all know there's no telco better than the other...

All these number seem a little messed up, according to Vodafone

"By default all customers will be on the "Casual" GPRS pricing plan, this means you will be charged $0.10/10kb of data sent and received."

Which is of course 1c /kb so how do they get 11.35? if that wasn't inclusive of GST it would be $11.52 not $11.25

I am still looking for official confirmation from Telecom over the lowering of their price as well

My phone is out of juice so I can't check this, but I'm pretty sure if you go to the WAP homepage on your telecom cell phone, there is a link near the bottom that says 'pricing' or 'terms and pricing' or something like that. If this is all confirmed and official it should be reflected in the information you will find there.

xtra.co.nz/mobileinternet:

What does it cost?

It's free to browse around the Xtra WAP Menu on your mobile phone. You only start paying when you leave those menus and begin to use the services or enter an application such as a WAP game.

  • All content marked with an "*" will cost 35c (incl GST) to read that page or perform that particular task. For example when you read a specific news article or choose to send an Xtra Email from your Telecom mobile.

  • All content outside the Xtra WAP menu will cost 1c per kb.

  • All WAP games are 7c per page (excluding downloadable Java games)

  • All WAP Chat services are 7c per page or refresh (pages auto refresh every 15 seconds)

  • Finally, some services, like downloading ringtones or sending Picture Messages have differing costs. In these instances you will get a message on your mobile telling you how much they cost so you can choose to proceed before downloading or sending them.

Yea I saw that from tonys blog afterwards, I had wanted more confirmation that it wasn't a typo, but after seeing it on the wap page itself I decided it must be genuine
