BB seems pretty slow here, was wondering with these specs if a splitter at the demarq will help the connection at all?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

For the uptime, thats a considerable amount of errors.

Sync speed does look a little on the lower side.

Absolutely a splitter is most likely to help, nobody can say without utter certainty based off the stats shown if it would indeed help and be the fixall for you.

no idea, how far are you from the exchange/cabinet

it cant hurt but i dont think you would gain much if you are actually a wee distance from the exchange/cabinet

it you are reasonably close then your house wiring could be pretty poor

follow peter readers questions and it will help us a little more

^^^ but you know thats not always true, a bad line will make it look further than it actually is

actually looking into it your up and down attenuation are messed up, 19dB up and 43dB down. so you have a bad line coming into your house by the looks

but the question is how far are you from the exchange/cabinet?

The chorus maps on their site dont show cabinets and exchanges anymore unfortunately.

Lining up maps with approximately where your blue dot is there..

Your on the Havelock North Exchange (on porter drive)

Just along the edge of where HVN pushes out to unfortunately.

Quick calculation i see about 2KM there, as i said before, your stats indicate more around the just over 3KM Mark. likely the cable itself doesnt take the most direct route however.

missed this before..

Yes it is possible stats are higher due to a fault, i was simply making a prediction based off the stats.

have put a splitter in and new results below. doesn't look like much has changed, speedtest initially showed a good improvement, up to 6mbs download but now seems to be fluctuating... think a call to fault and an overnight test may be in order.

Looks like something is degrading and its resyncing to try to hold stable there.

is it possible a joint is a bit loose? cable not quite in securely?

How did you do the splitter installation? Jell crimps?

Your attenuation has gone down, if you were getting 6mbit speedtest, sounds like your sync rate doubled Which is a great outcome.

i got an electrician to install it. he mentioned something about gel caps, so assume all is connected ok. there was no actual demarq just a cable from the street terminated underneath the house. he installed it there then ran cat5 direct to the modem.

the spliiter is one of these

maybe take a photo of it?

was this electrician experienced in data? he may have not quite terminate cat5 correctly on the jackpoint assuming splitter is done right?

For a line with a 40dB attenuation figure I think you have done well. Also, considering Chorus put you in the >5Mbps zone then your results are in line with that.

ok, thanks for the confirmation.

still seems weird though that after the splitter install everything seemed very snappy comparatively and a speed test to Spark show twice the usual download speeds. about an hour later when I tried it was back down to 1-2mbs. ill keep an eye on it and get faults to run a line test if its still up and down.

thanks for everyones input.
