Hi,

From: http://www.spark.co.nz/shop/mobile/internationalroaming/gettingreadytoroam.html

Prepaid customers will receive a charge for any voicemail’s deposited in their voicemail box while roaming, even if their device is switched off. This is charged at the standard per min rate for receiving calls while roaming. Alternatively, you can turn off voicemail while you’re overseas by calling us.

This means that I'll be paying per minute rate when someone leaves a message which is fine.

Would it be correct to assume that the charge starts when the greeting message is being played? EG: I will pay for receiving a message even if the caller doesn't leave a message (hangs up during the greeting before the beep)?

Thanks.

Interestingly enough (and kinda fair), 2degress states the following:

If you would prefer you can divert all calls to voicemail to avoid any extra charges while roaming. To do this use the "Divert All' menu item on your mobile, and divert calls to +64 22 202 2000. Then all calls will be automatically sent to voicemail.

Could someone confirm that if I redirect all calls immediately to Voicemail, no surcharge will be applied? It makes sense since the call will never leave the country if the immediate voicemail redirect will be in place.

Based on the way its written, no, I think it most likely you will be charged. A permanent divert is in effect the same as having the device switched off in terms of the way it works on the network.

Do I read it wrong?

Doesn't this mean that I'm avoiding (eg: not incurring) any charges if I divert all calls?

(obviously this statement relates only to 2degress)

Sorry yes not very clear on my part, no charge on 2degrees but I expect charged on Spark.

I'm waiting on their live chat as suggested by someone on the other thread. Let's see.

Are you sure?

From what I understand, calls are handed to the roaming partner, then if your device is off isn't answered, they are handed back to the NZ telco incurring a roaming charge.

A Divert in contrast, never leaves the NZ Telco to incur the charge

Also if your phone is turned off, the roaming partner tells the NZ Telco to not bother sending calls to them.

Edit - Corrected information

The live chat person didn't seem too confident in answering but it seem to suggest that it will incur a charge no matter what settings are in place (like unconditional divert).

Bummer. I wasn't necessarily keen in porting to 2degrees but at least their website is quite clear.

Hopefully one of the bright Sparks (sorry, couldn't resist) will be along soon to confirm.

If you have an unconditional divert you shouldn't incur any roaming charges for incoming calls, you won't receive any calls but you will obviously be charged for any outgoing calls or data usage.

This would be my expectation as well but let's see if someone will notice the thread.

Thanks for your help.

No, if your phone is turned off, the roaming partner tells the NZ telco (when it is turned off) and thereafter it is the same as having a permanent divert in place (as far as the call routing goes).

Hmm, their roaming FAQ states:

Prepaid customers will receive a charge for any voicemail’s deposited in their voicemail box while roaming, even if their device is switched off. This is charged at the standard per min rate for receiving calls while roaming. Alternatively, you can turn off voicemail while you’re overseas by calling us.
