Guessing their plans are cheaper than that of ISPs that do have 24hr call centre's?

Why would you ring up to query your bill in the middle of the night?

But but... Everyone wants to query their account and get a credit for one text message at 4am?? Don't they.

The broadband helpdesk is 24/7... but a very limited support staff from my experience.

A whole heap of people work night shifts, or are just too busy during the day to find the time to spend listening to hold music.

In my case we'd gotten the days work all done, the kids packed away and I was hoping I could get my wifes number switched to a new SIM so she could use a new phone.

I was kind of expecting New Zealands biggest telecom to have a 24 hour support centre that could at least get a job logged if they could't do it over the phone.

Online chat, if you have time to post on Geekzone right now during the day you would have time to post in online chat and they can get it sorted. I've always used them whenever I have a problem

That makes sense, I would have done the same and probably written a letter to my local MP and also contacted the media as well because there is nothing worse than having to wait until the next day to get my wifes number switched over to a new SIM.

Very droll ... wish I had so much wit.

Basically I was surprised they don't have a call centre and it got me wondering how Spark customers get help out of hours or if they are overseas in another timezone.

well if its a fault or lost or stolen phone they have a 24/7 faults line for that, but general help/enquires you have to call during opening hours

Was it a mission-critical request?

Mission critical or not its about a level of service and something some of us value very highly, Where companies with 24/7 contact is available I will often ignore any options where it is not, I am more comfortable in the evening/night and contact centres are often quieter during this time so I often chose to make that type of call during this time.

I am off to work soon. I rang Spark now because this is the time that suits MEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh they are closed when all I wanted was to get them to swap my sim. Oh well, I guess I am not as important as having staff work 24/7 to suit my frivolous needs.
