We moved to Otaki Beach over 3 years ago, accepted 6MB was as good as it was going to get and promptly forgot about it.

We went away a couple of weeks ago, come back, and now there is a shiny new cabinet (OTG) being installed just up the road to replace the old one. I spoke with the Chorus bloke working on it today and he confirmed it was fibre to the cabinet and there was work further down towards my house to put 'fibre to the home' his words.

Is there any way I can find out what will be offered by this cabinet ? I've called Spark who say they have no idea. I've called Chorus who said it should be switched on next month but I need to talk to my provider. None of the 'put your address in here' websites tell me anything I don't already know.

Can a Spark person confirm when they will be offering fibre plans on this cabinet and is there any way of knowing what speeds I can expect ?

Cheers

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

OT/G is just a regular Whisper cabinet installed as part of RBI delivering VDSL2 and ADSL2+ services. It does not deliver FTTH.

Like many Chorus areas P2P fibre services are available if you're prepared to front with the cash. It's safe to say you will not be able to afford this.

OT/G would be correct name for that cabinet.

Just to cover VDSL availability off that cabinet.. Here's the planned area.

Nobody can really tell you, Yeah you will get 50Mbit there! or something like that, but indicating vdsl is likely possible is doable. I would be interested in your current DSL statistics which would be able to give some rough indication.

Planned dates is July 2015 to June 2016 so anywhere in there you will get migrated over, As fibre is still being laid currently your a little way off still however.

As for UFB, unless I am confusing LFCs, I dont see plans for around there.

Great, thanks.

So given I'm about 800m from the cabinet I should expect something between 30-50Mbps given all the usual caveats ?

[e] it's been a long day.

Mbps

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Is this enough ?
Line Attenuation (Up/Down): 22.8/45.0
SN Margin (Up/Down): 13.2/12.1

I would be surprised if there are more than 40-50 houses in that area if that helps me.

I see the Spark website now says Ultra Fast Fibre is coming soon for my address. Is that not the case ?

Could you please tell me where you got that map from.

Thanks

That's an internal Chorus map for their customers, it's not available to the public.

martyyn:

That's not relevant. The whisper cabinets have enough capacity to serve all the houses in its area. What you care about is the length and quality of the copper from your house to the cabinet.

I don't see any Chorus fibre plans in that area, unless I'm reading it wrong?

As above, its not a public facing map sorry. i wish the days of "bbc" would come back for the transparency it offered.

800m, i would put you on the 30mbit mark, although given those attenuation figures i suspect you aren't on that cabinet, at-lest currently...

does your house show up inside that area that hio77 provided? if not then you are probably fed from somewhere else

If you're 800m from that cabinet and connected to it, I would put you at closer to 30 Mbps. I'm 300m from mine and when I had VDSL the best I could get was 61 - which was still fine.

Are you covered by the map shown above?

Jase2985: does your house show up inside that area that hio77 provided? if not then you are probably fed from somewhere else

Yep, I'm at the other end of Rangiuru Road.

There are no other cabinets down here we are at the end of the line.

The Chorus bloke said he expected to finish moving everyone from the old to the new sometime this week, but couldn'y say anything more than that.

When you say you are at the other end of Rangiuru Rd - do you mean closer to Marine Parade or back towards Main St from the Cabinet?

If towards Marine Parade then yes you will be feed from this cabinet - the other way not.

Current xDSL service out of the old cabinet is feed all the way back from the Exchange (which is about a further 2km back)

Yes, the Marine Parade end. But I'm well inside the diagram posted above.

Correct.

Yep, were around 3km from the exchange so I was quite happy with 6Mbps.
