So, I have a mate who is based out North Christchurch in what would be classed as rural - North Loburn. His area is being targetted by Scorch Communications which appears a wireless internet provider so prior to making any decision about swapping he's keen to understand if he can look at his current line / setup to see about any improvement.  He's on a spark unlimited broadband plan but is constantly finding his plan to be fairly unuseable with constant page timeouts and very very very slow download speeds. His kids are going mad as their xbox 1 takes days to download a sizeable patch etc. Suffice to say, after about 6 months of accepting it he's keen to do something.  He's logged into his modem and sent me some of the following information.  I can't see anything dreadful re line attenuation ( thought it would be high) or noise but perhaps some of the smarter folks on here can point me ( and him ) towards any resolvable issues. Thanks for your advice

Bandwith Up / Down [kbps]    864 / 7.552

Output Power Up / Down [dBm]    11,9 /  11,37

Line Attenuation Up / Down [dB]   9 / 16.5

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Guessing you mean 7552 kbps or 7.552 mbps

Your friend is syncing at G.DMT (G.992.1) thats adsl1 so the speed sounds about right. based off your friends comments, sounds much like a conklin situation.


on the map your looking at LBN/BP shows as providing VDSL, however this conflicts with chorus's non public facing maps.


im having to take a bit ofa guess at your friends location here, but assuming he is above where Bradys road meets loburn terrace, hes fed off LBN/BP Otherwise its LBN/BA - ild double check exactly which cabinet, there is a slight bit of overlap in the overlays just below there for both cabinets.

Looks as though LBN/BP is still in progress of being upgraded, assuming your friend is served off this he should jump to around about a good 14/1 once completed all things being right, just shy of the serving range of VDSL.

As far as i can see LBN/BA is not planned to be upgraded currently.

He's pretty close to brady's road and loburn terrace road intersection if that helps to narrow the cabinet down.

Apologies for maybe a daft question but what are LBN/BP and LBN/BA.

I'm guessing from your comments re upgradability of the infrastructure that schorch may well be the only way to go for increased download speed

The LBN codes are the names of the Chorus cabinets. He will most likely be connected to one or the other.
And yes, it looks like he's on ADSL1 - if so, that's about the peak speed he will get (assuming his cabinet is not being upgraded).

right, in that case ild say the maps are slightly off with where "addresses" actually at there. 

your friend should be on LBN/BP and should wait for that cabinet to be finished being upgraded, its scheduled currently to be done by about June 2016. Although likely be reasonably faster.


Given the distance assuming shortest run, and the line attenuation, that makes sense too.
