I'm not sure what's happened, however:

After the last few good months of having Fibre on, I came home from work last night to find my Mikrotik and backup Mikrotik router can not connect to Spark fibre anymore. Nothing in my configuration changed on these routers last night. They worked, now they don't.

I plugged the Huawei modem back in and it works fine.

I plugged the Mikrotik's back in, they still don't work.

I changed the Mikrotik back to the default MTU settings and still no go. Originally I had the Ethernet MTU set to 1512, VLAN 1508 and PPPoE 1500. This had been working as good as gold since I had Fibre on in March up until I came home from work last night.

I'm not sure what's going wrong, it's as if all of a sudden Spark have made a configuration change and now the Mikrotik routers can't log on to Spark fibre in Invercargill.

Any ideas?

Gavin.

Can you please PM me your details so that I can look into this for you.  A software upgrade was performed in your area last night (no PPP configuration change).

I am looking at a fibre circuit in our lab on the new software version that is standing up with a PPP MTU of 1500 without issue.

Thanks for looking in to this for me. I'm back on the Huawei so I can access Geekzone.

Here's a snippet from Mikrotik:

When I plug the Mikrotik in, it tries to establish at a phenomenal amount of re-tires.

It seems to get DNS info, then give up.

I will look into your line shortly, however, just looking at our BNG, at the moment I have 29 Fibre broadband services standing up with PPP MTU of 1500.

They are all Technicolor routers (which Spark used to supply).  So I am confident at this stage that a 1500 byte PPP MTU over PPPoE for Fibre is possible.

I,ve tried the default MTU expecting a 1492 or Mikrotik 1400 but same issue so have seitched it back.

I wonder if I should also try a firmware update on the routers incase it's Mikrotik compatability issue.

The Mikrotik is connected to the ONT again re-trying. I just had to use the Huawei to get a news update for my radio station given the Grande concert situation.

Thanks Gavin, hard to say what is going on at the moment.

Do you have any further detail that you're able to enable on your logging to see what is going on?

The connection will go through a number of phases:

1/ PPPoE

2/ PPP LCP

3/ PPP PAP

4/ PPP IPCP

I can see evidence of the connection getting to at least (3) (perhaps 4 - it's unclear) at least some of the time.  Then the connection dies with an error of: "Session is in setup phase for too long".  That would indicate to me that the two ends of the PPP connection cannot agree on a particular parameter.
Are you able to turn on debug for all of those layers?  Or mirror the traffic on the WAN port of your Mikrotik and get a capture of it (pcap)?  I would be very interested to see that.

For what it is worth my Spark Fibre connection is up on a Mikrotik RB750g - will check MTU for you.

Out of interest, I see you have a static IP.  Do you have that configured in  your modem?  I.e. do you have that hard coded in your config?
We don't recommend that people do that, but we do occasionally see that.

No but you've just given me the best clue and a crash course in packet sniffing. There's a Routerboard packet requesting after successful login a private IP. There is no IP set on the PPPoE interface at all let alone the one it is asking for. I'm thinking this is a firmware bug now that for some reason didnt take effect over the past few months. Why it chose last nighy to go heywire I don't know and on both the 750gl and 951ui. I'll try setting the spark static hard as the pppoe interface rather than leave it dynamic and see what happens.

Interesting.

Sounds like the issue is within the IPCP negotiation.  IPCP is Internet Protocol Control Protocol, and is the part of the PPP layer responsible for exchanging IP layer addressing for the PPP link.

[off the top of my head] What it is normal to see if the home router does a ConfReq (configuration request) for an IP and DNS servers of 0.0.0.0

Then BNG will then send back an ConfRej (configuration reject) which includes suggested values (i.e. your assigned IP and DNS servers).

Then we see another from the home router ConfReq containing the values the BNG sent, and then the BNG will send back an ConfAck.  At this point IPCP will be up. (I've ignored the fact that there is a negotiation that goes the other way where the BNG lets the home router know it's IP address).

Even if you get this working, very keen to see what is occurring with the negotiation above for your particular line.  As you say it may be a bug with that particular router, but something good to know.

Dave.

I just need to figure out how to upload the output file on my mobile somewhere. Or do you want an email?

It's a wiresharck 1.12.13 output of the start to rejection issue.

It looks like the Mikrotik is not accepting the static IP offered and it keeps requesting a private, which is not set on any interface in the address list. Real strange.

I see the other requests to and fro including the BNG address etc...
