Hi there back in the day of POTS you put a meter on the line and a DC voltage was present.

Most new houses now have fiber and are connected to ENT.

My new house is rural with no fiber, but VDSL availability. My prospective network provider says:

A one-off standard connection fee is $50. If the connection incurs any additional installation, charges may be applied as below:

*If Chorus technician visit Exchange / Cabinet to make connection  - it costs extra $55.00;
*Or if Chorus technician visit your property to make connection -  it costs extra $155.00.

*I understand in house contract the above work should be done, but is there any way to check it myself, to ensure those Chorus fees wont appy?

I have usual service tools like meters and so on (retired serviceman).

Cheers, Al.

the DC voltage trick only worked if there was a connection between a line card in the NEAX and your property

That doesn't work with DSLAMs unless there is Jumpering between the POTS IN on the DSLAM and the NEAX (which will only be case if the previous person had POTS on the line)

if the previous person had POTS but no DSL then an Exchange/Cabinet visit will be required to jumper you

If they had DSL it should be a case of just re-enabling your port

Then i say it would be a full install including site visit has the new property been issued a SAM ID from chorus?

SAM ID now we are cooking with gas. If it has a SAM ID what does this mean? What I would like to have in my hot little hand is a certificate which proves that the wiring has been done up to the stage I needed in OP eg no further wiring required.

The SAM ID is the reference to your Address in the chorus database

Until you order service for the first time it wont be connected to the exchange/cabinet yet so I doubt it will be what is called "intact" and will most likely just be a pair sitting un-jumpered on the exchange/cabinet main distribution frame

You should be able to get a copy of the specifications from the builder if it's a new house which should detail what network cabling was installed in the house, if any. Is there a network enclosure in the garage or somewhere else in the house?

When we built 10 years ago, I needed to arrange with Vodafone (RSP at the time) to get broadband/phone connected and then run a couple of cat5e cables from the demarcation point to the network hub where a Signet ST2206 was installed.

This house has been prepped with a distribution box: ethernet distribution points, 2 x 230v power sockets for hardware eg ONT and modem, and the satellite feeds.

Outside is unfinished, with cat5 and fiber cabling still above ground, with the promise of a complete connection at end of job middle of next month.

Cheers, Al.

It will be an on-site visit. The builders contractor (usually sparky) will:
- terminate a phone jack in the house and leave internal cable hanging out the wall where ETP will go
- bury conduit with external phone cable from ETP to chorus pillar

On first connection, chorus tech installs ETP, connects internal and external cable, and connects cable to chorus cables at pillar. You can't just buy an ETP, and chorus doesn't want any old electrician making connections to their network.

Are you trying to argue that your builder should arrange to have the house ready for a $55 connection?

They said it would be connected ready to go. Is what Im expecting unusual? Im expecting to pay the one-off connection fee of $50 but not the other fees.

Are you getting copper or fibre? sounds like its a full site visit from Chorus, the sparky only do the internal wiring

VDSL.

Well last visit to site as I said the outside wires were lying coiled up next to the local cabinet. The vendor said "that would all be sorted and connected" I dont want to ask for anything thats unusual.

Ok I dont know why you were talking about ONTs before then..... I suspect all your internal wiring is complete and Chorus just need to connect you to the network (which will be a full install as its the first time)

Hi things are getting variable; we might need to disconnect and reconnect due to needs by residents using the property, my future supplier on non-contract says:

To get ADSL/VDSL re-connected, Chorus will check if there is an available port at your local exchange/cabinet. Once the previous ADSL/VDSL line has been relinquished, the port used for the address might be re-assigned for other premises in your area.  This is the situation we cannot know until the re-connection order has been done by Chorus
