Gidday GeekZoners,
After constiently developing issues with my current ISP I am considering switching to Telecom with their new promotion for a free Thomson TG585 with any plan above 3 gigs. Can anyone tell me about their experiences with these routers? I currently have a DLink G-604GT which has served me well. It is however rather old and still on original firmware, I don't fancy upgrading it to be useable with ADSL2.
As a sub-question, hows Telecom Broadband rated these days? From reading these forums they seem to be improving. I'm two blocks from an ADSL2 exchange so I'm liking the idea of ADSL2 speeds.

The Thomson TG585's are great, good stable connection and a nice easy to use interface. I also had a Dlink 604T and I can say this router (TG585) is fantastic, hasn't caused any problems so far and best of all (perhaps it was just me) but I can leave this router switched on 24/7 without hearing a loud buzzing sound that my old Dlink made.

For ADSL 2+ you will need to get Telecom's Explorer plan or higher =)

As for the ISP I think they are great, but then I would say that working for them, however I will say I have found the support to be good when I have needed it and in the past they were always willing to send out a tech for broadband problems (drop outs with the Dlink), however that’s all solved now as the tech moved me ADSL somewhere closer and I've never looked back.

Wait times have also reduced when calling the help desk over the years, so can't complain there either.

Congrats nzbnw you just talked me into moving to Telecom! ha. Thats exactly what I wanted to hear to convience me to move

I'm looking at explorer. Compared to my current ISP, its effectively FS/FS with 10 gigs worth of data compared to none (any guesses as to ISP?

).
Now I just have to convience my partner...

Update: After spedning nearly an hour on the phone with Telecom customer service I've first learnt that if you are a current broadband subscriber through a service that wholesales telecom broadband (xnet etc) the free modem offer only applies to a 24 month contract. Appearntly "Offer only available to 'new' Telecom Broadband customers" means someone who hasn't had a broadband connection wholesaled by Telecom on there line for 30 days plus. Nowhere on the Telecom website could I find this specifically referenced. The last Telecom employee I talked to seemed a little hisitant to state that as well, he didn't even seem to know about the free wireless router promotion. So evern if (like me) you've never had Telecom Broadband but you recieve broadband provided by Telecom to another supplier you are still considered a Telecom Broadband Subscriber...

Am awaiting yet another call back, may just can the whole thing at this stage.

Thats incorrect, you can get a Free Wireless modem as long as you are not already an existing Telecom Broadband customer. As you are coming from a wholesale providor you can take up this promo.

Where are you based?

I'm based in Fendalton, Christchurch just around the corner from the exchange. I thought it didn't sound right so I choose not to continue with the signup. I've looked throughout there website and I haven't found anything which defines a wholesale customers own customer as being a telecom broadband customer. The customer service rep didn't seem to know what I was on about when I referenced the promo, little worrying that. Should I perhaps go into a telecom store and discuss it with them? Yes Visit a Telecom Retail Store, they can give you your modem then and there and arrange for your service to be transferred from your existing service provider to Telecom.

Thanks heaps nzbnw! I'll visit my local telecom store tomorrow and post my results on here. Have decided not to tell my partner, see if she notices any difference

Got connected this afternoon, setup the modem and it was sorted! Now syncing at 12727/802 which is around 5000 more than with my old provider. International speeds so far have been excellent.

Fantastic, glad you’re enjoying it! Looks like your getting some good speeds, now I am jealous seeing as I am on ADSL1 (although it's almost maxed out syncing wise, so I can't complain too much!).

I'm in sort of the same situation as KingJJ. I've just recently signed up for a Total Home package which comes with a 10Gb data plan. I've been on Xnet for about a year now, though mainly changed to take advantage of the unlimited national calls.

My internet hasn't changed over yet, but I received a new Thomson wireless modem in the mail today. The letter which came with it stated that I have received the modem free due to signing up on a 24 month plan. I was under the impression that I was signing up for a 12 month plan, given that the advertisements have the modem free for a 12 month sign up for new Telecom Broadband customers. From what I could see, was that you were a new Telecom customer if you have not been a Telecom Broadband customer within the last 30 days.

Does being with Xnet mean I have been a Telecom customer given that Xnet is a wholesaler?

I guess I will need to call Telecom, but if the modem is only free if I have a 24 month contract, then I'd rather return the modem so that I can have a 12 month plan. It would be nice to have an ADSL2+ modem seeing as I currently don't have one, but I don't want a 'free' one if it means I'm on a 2 year contract.

I only noticed the thread once I received the letter, so I was doing a little research.

Has anyone had the same experience?
