There's a news item about this new Spark 2660 flip-phone here:

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=27166

Anyone bought one? There are a couple of details I'd like to know more about, but Spark shops aren't keen on phone-in inquiries.

Thanks :-)

FWIW

HMD is/are the ashes of Nokia, which former execs  bought back after Microsoft extracted all the IP it could find and then burnt the brand to the ground.....

Thanks, I was aware of the the situation with the HDM\Nokia companies. But, as I said, I'd really like to hear from anyone who's bought the Spark-marketed 2660 model, mostly because I've just purchased a phone that's marketed as a 'Nokia Flip 2660', but turns out to be another HDM. Ostensibly, it's virtually identical to the Spark-marketed model, except there's more color choice from HDM - green, purple and pink, while Spark only offers black. But another difference is quite major: my Nokia 2660 has a mini-A charging port on the lower left side, while the Spark port is USB-C. The Nokia can also use a charging cradle (also mini-A input) - I bought one separately. Which possibly explains why HDM have been so insistent that a charging cradle isn't really necessary with the Spark phone as it has the easier-to-use USB-C charging port.

Anyway, I'd still to hear from anyone who bought the Spark 2660, to compare notes about the two phones' features. I may still buy a Spark.

Currently $89 from Spark, im thinking this could be good for my kid going into "form 1" next year...

BUT, I see its only 3G/4G...so why in this day and age are Spark pushing phones that are not 5G?

I see you have bought a Nokia 2660. It doesn't appear on the approved VoLTE list for One NZ or 2Degrees. You need to ensure it does.

This Spark 2660 has compatibility with Spark VoLTE. Not sure it will work on One NZ or 2Degrees VoLTE either.

Pretty sure 5G is data only. A phone like that doesn't need 5G, it would be an unnecessary expense and total waste of the hardware.

The Nokia (HMD) 2660 Flip works fine on One. I just switched the One SIM card from the Doro to the Nokia and away it went. The cradle charger I bought separately (Dick Smith) also works.

EDIT: Except the cradle cost ($54) damn near as much as the phone. Daylight robbery for a piece of kit that probably sells for sixpence in China 😠

It's a cheap phone that works. What's not to like? Of course, your child (Form 1 = Standard 5 still? 10 or 11 yo?) will likely want a $2000 phone in a very short time, so enjoy the benefits of the low cost (and low risk) communication device while it's acceptable :-)

I don’t disagree, infact I did say “this could be good”.  Said kid will get hand me downs when the time is appropriate (as is now, but use of such is restricted to home wifi and parental controls active).

I forgot 5G will be for data, so 4G is fine for calls and text.

anyhow, there’s a feature missing and that’s location/tracking, so I’ll have to go look for a cheapo android (or bite the bullet and get myself a new phone and hand the old one over to said kid).

right, I’m back at square 1

hahah.

Is 'no location tracking' necessarily a bad thing? I mean, if a kid's phone had location tracking and the kid didn't want to be tracked,  might they be able to turn this off? Or, if a kid's phone had tracking, and the child was, god forbid, kidnapped, wouldn't the abductor know to dump the phone?

Anyway, Spark seems to offer some good deals for simpler phones here:

PS: I'm not a Spark promoter, just someone who's been fruitlessly searching for physical details of the Spark 2660 :-)

HMD's licence to the Nokia name ends soon so there is unlikely to be any more Nokia-branded phones from HMD.

I don't have these phones but someone on Gsmarena says the HMD revision has better build quality, which makes sense as it's newer. The camera on the 2660 is useless at 0.3mp.
