Before you go around saying "Telecom is ripping me off", there are things to check...

What's the wiring condition in your home? Is it new? When was the last time you checked it? Are you using correct filters? Are those filters in the correct position?

Is the firmware on your router updated? Are you using the right DSL Type for the connection you have?

Have you tried disconnecting all other devices (phone, modems, fax, alarms) from your line and tested downloading again? If it improved tried connecting one device at a time?

Are you sure your connection is to the nearest cabinet?

There are lots of things to test - most of the times bad speeds are related to one of the items above. And no, Telecom is not out there to rip you off.

How new is the cabinet, it may not be fully active yet. Check your address on:
http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps/

Also what make and model adsl modem/router do you have?

I titled it 'Telecoms ripping me off?' with a question mark.

This is not my account, this is my mates account, the one who told me my nets slower than it should be, he let me use just to post this.

His modem connects at around 10,000kbps and he gets 9.6mbps on speedtest, i would call that pretty much full speed on his line.

The cabinet has been there for 4 or 5 months now so I would say its active, also my modem is a Thomson TG585v7, the current modem telecom gives you .

The other posters are giving you a bit of a hard time lol, but no Telecom are not ripping you off heh.

You have an ADSL2+ capable modem, the adsl mode is G.992.5 (which is ADSL2+), you have super low line atteunation so no problems there.

It takes several months before the cabinets are fully commissioned, so I suspect either the cabinet is not fully commissioned yet or perhaps there may be a problem with the port config for your line.

Can you tell us exactly what it says in the right hand column on the maps site for your address, about the exchange/cabinet you're connected to?

This address is near a roadside cabinet which has already been upgraded with faster broadband equipment (ADSL2+ technology).

Please note that factors such as chosen broadband plan, home or business wiring, and modem type can still affect the broadband performance at this address.

A pre-qualification check is required to determine what broadband services, if any, are available at this address.

Actually I'm blind and just saw, you are sync'd to the cabinet at 18Mbit

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:
945 / 18.508

That's fine for your distance from the cabinet..

You must remember residential ADSL is a shared network best effort service, there is no guarantee of performance or speed.

The best analogy is a motorway, you can go upto 100km - but not if it's rush hour and/or congested.

You're not the only user on the "road"!

Your and all your neighbours connect to the cabinet at xMbit and the cabinet has shared backhaul to the exchange (probably ~1Gbit/s that's shared between all users connected to the cabinet), after that shared backhaul from the exchange to the ISP... the ISP has bandwidth to national and international destinations (also shared between users) and so on.

I would expect your speed test to a local server to be a little higher than 5Mbit, try the Auckland or Christchurch server.
