Hey all, just found this when looking at changing plans on the Telecom website:

"Telecom Broadband is available in your area now.

At this stage we can confirm that your phone line will not support the speed of our fastest broadband plans. These are up to 50 times faster than a dial- up connection.

Because our fastest plans are also popular for their large monthly data allowances you can still choose them, but please be aware that if you do, your connection will only run speeds up to 25 times faster than dial-up."

and then goes on to mention in the plan selection:

"Telecom Broadband Go
I am aware that my line does not support the download speed: maximum 2Mbps
Monthly charge: $39.95
Monthly data allowance:3GB"

WTH, maximum 2Mbp/s??
Why, why is it so low???

Chances are you house is too far away from the exchange hence a long line of copper.

If this is the case, Hopefully you should be cabinetised by the end of next year.

Hmm, I am am located about 4 km/s from the "Exchange" (or so I'm told).
All the wiring is new for us to get the connection, so I don't think wiring age is an issue.
Also, could you please explain the difference between Cabinet & Exchange?

Edit: Funny, I also thought of that tool just as I posted this.

Telecom have explain what your issue is - you're beyond the means of any guaranteed ADSL speeds so you're getting a best effort service.

Well there's your problem! 4km is quite far away and although you can still get ADSL, you won't get anywhere near the max speeds simply because of your distance from the exchange.

4km Could mean 5-6km of copper.

IIRC After 2km of copper. ADSL starts to deteriate. so you are lucky to get 2mb after 4km of copper

Cabinets are like mini exchanges. Fibre is comes to the cabinet and your copper line runs from the cabinet instead of the exchange, this hopefully giving people who are far away from their exchange, faster broadband over ADSL.

If your area is not scheduled to have a cabinet installed, then you are fresh out of luck.

2mbps down isn't too bad though, it should hold you off until we get fibre to the door!! (hopefully)

i was over 4k from exchange and was syncing with less than 1mbs. I got cabinetised a few months back and...

So would I be if it actually delivered it 24/7 and I wasnt being ripped off by paying for data too.

If you are paying premium prices for a connection, it makes sense to expect it. You get no discount because you get crap speeds, you get no cheaper data rates when it takes so long to arrive either.

Paying the same and getting a lot less than other people should piss everyone off.

Indeed, it does annoy me, as I used to get 8 Mb/s sync speeds in town.
Shouldn't I get some sort of 'Disadvanted Rural User discount' or opt to have no ADSL 2+, and get say $5-10 off?

Nope, no one else does - and every situation is far to different to just apply a blanket discount.

Seriously, 2 Mb/s isn't exactly dialup speed or anything - there are a LOT of rural customers out there who love to even just get 512k.
