First off apologies if it has already been mentioned. Couldn't find anything about it.

Got mention today of a special offer available for XT users through @TelecomNZ on Twitter.  The info is below. Link here: http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/special-offers/text-anyone-2500

Text Anyone 2500
2500 Texts to any NZ network for only $12

With Telecom's new Text Anyone 2500™ Text Extra, you get 2500 texts a month that you can use to text anyone on any NZ mobile network for only $12. That's less than 1/2¢ a text* (National person to person texts only).

Just add this Text Extra before 31 July 2010 to your XT plan or XT prepaid mobile and it will be available to you until 31 July 2011, that's at least a year!

If you already have a TXT 150, TXT 600 or TXT 1500 Text Extra but would like to switch to the new $12 Text Anyone 2500™ Text Extra dial *333 from your mobile or change your Extras options online.

*20c per text charge applies once you've used up your included 2500 text allowance per month. Only available on XT prepaid and postpaid plans.

Why is every add on $12?

Makes me laugh how with all the 'competition' we have here that all the offerings seem to cost the same albeit with a slightly different flavour

It's beyond me but seeing as I missed the last add-on and I already use the 600 text extra I figured why not

It's not so much the actual figure but the fact that every add on VF and Telecom offer is always the same price, hence my reference to 'competition.

For competition read duopoly

i dont think you can really call nz a duopoly any more... what with there being so many more companies....

So many more, 2Degrees and who else?

In terms of what's on offer in the mobile space it's a duopoly as 2Degrees' current offerings are only competing on the light user market

Same pricing is marketing to Human brains.
We automatically compare all $12 add-ons to see which offers us the best deal. It's the $$ amount that hooks us. But since they're all actually different when you look deeper we aren't always comparing like with like.... and if they made it a different price less folk would bother looking to try to compare it to something else.

Unless they made it less and then you'd look which is my point. In a duopoly there's no incentive to charge less as then the 'other one' would simply match the price and they'd both lose out. Ever wondered why petrol prices are exactly the same everywhere no matter what company you use?

actually there can be - if you have Bertrand Competition,

But that doesn't really matter since we do not have a duopoly anyway - 2degrees for a start, and then when you take into account the MVNOs there are probably another half dozen or so providers (Telstra, B&W, Orcon, Slingshot, Callplus  to name 5. I think thereis one more),  with at least 3 more coming in the next six months.

It is very rare for a country to have more than 4 network operators, and not many have more than 3.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_Europe - check it out,  hardly any countries in europe have more than 4 MNOs, even the most densly populated ones,  and most have 3 or fewer - just like NZ

Your record is stuck on this one.

I know there are other options but in many of the countries you talk about there is a real price/offering difference between the 3 or 4 networks whereas here there's next to none.

firstly I'm very impressed that you are fully aware of all the pricing plans across Europe and how the various networks compare there.

Secondly, You are absolutely right that offering accross the three networks we have are basically identical. Let's look at some examples
Clearly there is no differnece between XT 2500 Txt to any network for $12 and the same thing that exists on vodfone and 2degrees.

oh wait. bad example, that offer *doesn't* exist on those networks. vodafone txt bundles are only on-net, and 2degrees doesn't do them at all.

Let's pick another one.

how about Vodafones 200 mins offnet calling for $12. Xt and 2degrees must have an identical offer to that right?
Hmmmm, I'm struggling to find it though. perhaps you could link to the equivalent Xt or 2degrees plan?

then you have 2Degrees magic topups. Top up $20, get free txts. Compare that to the identical offers on Xt and voda.... hmm, ok scratch that one too. Xt and Voda don't do that as far as I can see.

Let's compare headline prepay rates - 2degrees = 44cpm, Xt and Voda = 89cpm. As you say, basicaly no difference whatsoever. 2degrees are a mere 50% cheaper. "next to none".

anyhoo, your original point was that all the offerings seem to cost $12

I can direct you to many things which cost a different amount:
e.g. 150 SMS for $6 on telecom
My friend - $6 for unlimited calling to one number
500MB of data for $30
voda do a 100MB for $10

In fact about the only things I can think of that are $12 right now are this offer (previously unlimited txt for the same price),  the new 200 mins offer from Voda @ $12 and I think there is a $12 data pack for 120MB from XT.     That is a grand total of 3 (three).
are there any other $12 offers out there? Not that I can think of, but if your expert knowledge of european mobile pricing extends to the NZ market maybe you can post some more?

Black & White, Telstra Clear and there are supposed to be 3 new providers coming online piggy backing off XT. It cant be a duoperly if the other providers dont want to compete.

I don't know what's rattled your cage, all I did was make a throwaway (and light hearted) comment and you get all prissy.

Just for you I found some 2 Bestmates and TXT4000 on VF

I honestly can't be bothered with this anymore as you seem to be defending Godzone and all it's technological wonderment to the hilt.

Enjoy the rest of your day, I will
