I just happened to be looking at the Facebook Blog today and found this article about 0.facebook.com which is a stripped-down mobile Facebook portal offered as an unmetered service by 50 mobile operators worldwide. Down at the bottom of the page it says it will be coming soon to Telecom NZ.

Haven't seen anything announced by Telecom to this effect, but this is a much better partnership for Telecom than Bebo so I'm sure they'll make a song and dance about it soon enough.

Steve

This has been discussed in our Vodafone forums (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=61583) - someone asked if it was coming to Vodafone, but obviously Telecom trumped it...

I just saw this ad on facebook's homepage:

Go to 0.facebook.com to use Facebook Mobile without data charges. Only available on Telecom New Zealand.

I just tried it and it went through, rather than giving the "not available with this operator" message. I'll check my usage meter once it's had a chance to update.

OK, it's been three hours and I have not been charged usage. Looks like it's all up and running :)

That's probably because it will be a WAP page only.

If you read the between the lines, this is a Facebook move to reach developing countries (why New Zealand is in the list who knows, m.facebook.com works ok). That's what they have out there...

The iPhone can handle WAP -- unless they're blocking particular devices out.

We are indeed launching Facebook Zero. It is only available for WAP handsets (ones going through our proxy). It is not available for PDA's & smart phones.

You'll see it start to appear over the next 1 - 2 business working days :)

I noticed that, on my Sony Aino I can only access it via the default browser (WORST BROWSER *EVER*)  that came with the phone but not with Opera Mini (makes the phone a 100 times better). Any way to fiddle with the settings to fix this?

Opera use their own proxy for Opera Mini therefore you cannot use this service as Opera will not use our proxy.
