Heya:

My new flat has got Telecom Broadband (20gb FS/FS plan I think) - The modem is connected to ADSL2+ - but it seems we are getting poor performance.

Next problems, I can't log into the router, nobody knows any of the passwords, or none of us are the account holders. The account is owned by the Landlord which won't do much about it, so I can't check the line speeds or anything like that. Heck I don't even know the Username for our Xtra Connection.

So, it's looking pretty grim at the moment, Telecom won't let us log a fault since we are not the "Account Holders" and the only thing we really know about this connection is the phone number the ADSL is connected through.

We have one of those Telecom Provided Thompson Wireless Routers, it has issues with rebooting when it feels like it, so have no idea if that's to blaim or if it's our line.

Here's the christchurch speedtest, Note this is done during Offpeak times. I used to get 18mbit approx at my old place on Snap - On Telecom it seems to be pretty poor, especially since it's connected at ADSL2+

The next problem is pages can take forever to "Start" loading, eg - Facebook photos sit on the classic "Hai i'm facebook and i'm loading" animated GIF for about 3mins, once it's loaded it's fine, until if you go to another Photo Album / Profile.

Youtube? It will sit there for about 5mins before it even starts buffering, once it's buffering it's fine from there - Note, I have a MacBook with the latest Flash Player, it's not the computers fault, since it does the same on my Linux Box connected via Ethernet.

So the question to everyone, is there any way to rectify this issue? Landlord won't help out since "He doesn't have time" and also having the router locked down is really annoying, I want to forward 1 port to my MacBook but there's no way I can, it doesn't look like UPNP is enabled on it also. Is there a way of resetting the password on these boxes without touching the ADSL settings? Or even a way of getting Telecom to reset our account settings so I can reprogram this badboy myself?

I believe you should speedtest to Auckland for Telecom, not Christchurch?

Hi Michael, could you please post the stats page from the router showing the line sync speed, attenuation, noise margin etc. cannot remember exactly where you will find it but I think its under Broadband connection then details.

Also what phones and other sockets are on the line, are all phone devices, fax/skybox etc connected via filters

Like explained above, we have no access to the router, the admin password has been changed so can't post the stats.

Yeah seriously either sounding like a filter/phone issue or too far away from the exchange

Hi, so the standard admin login that the router defaults to does not work?, I would complain to the landlard and ask him to help, to understand whats happening you need to have some tools.

Another option is to use another modem, depending on what ISP you are with you may not get a PPP session, but at least see what the line is doing.

However its on Telecom and ADSL2 then there is a good change PPP authentication is not being used so you could enter anything in the PPP account details and still be away, then again if PPP authentication is used your screwed, hence just try another modem to read the line stats is safer.

you dont need them on the xtra network now days just user@xtrabb.co.nz and some random password

From memory the Thomsons have the default Xtra Username and Password configured in them so a reset should bring back the defaults and he will still be able to authenticate.

If you are not the account holder & therefore, aren't the owners of the modem/router, then I would suggest it is probably illegal to tamper with the modem, even just 'resetting' it to the factory defaults.

Before you even consider doing the above, I'd suggest unplugging all the phones in the house (including the Sky box if you have one). Then power cycle the modem and do another speedtest. I would recommend doing both Chch & Auckland and use the fastest.

Bought a old ADSL2+ Modem from Nelson with me, tested that out with just a random Xtra Password and it worked on the internet, so I reset to factory settings on this modem.

Here's my Line Stats:

DSL Type:

I have noticed a setting called "Web Browsing Interception" on the Thompson Router - Now I know for a fact these routers ain't at all grunty to be acting like a sort of Proxy, so I disabled it and now:

Before I turned this off I got pretty much the same speedtest as my first post, I always got annoyed when a page wasn't loading to get the annoying Thompson "Hey dude, this page isn't loading, so I stepped in to tell you" page. Going from a Custom Debian Linux router with a few nic's for different zones to this is a bit of a step back, I hate having no control.

It seems though, this router is quite literally "a router for dummies", so all I want to do is forward port 8000 to my computer.

1) How the hell do you tell this router to give my computer a IP like 192.168.1.11, I don't want the IP 192.168.1.65! I know I could set a static IP on my computer and just change to it when I bring my laptop home, but this is a annoyance on my behalf.

2) So do I really have to edit a service in order to forward port 8000? Why can't this option just be on the standard port forwarding page? Do I really have to go through all these quite hidden menu's to create the service, and _then_ forward it?

I think it's time to replace this badboy with something with a bit more grunt...

Also thanks guys for pointing out that Xtra has a default password like that, I have read somewhere that it blocks port 25, I don't think I need that nor do any of my flatmates so that's all good.

Edit: Here's the line Attenuation. Seems like we are connected to the exchange instead of a cabinet.

Yeah found the port forwarding on the router, had to go through quite a bit to find it. It's not exacally a option out in the open for everyone to see imo.

I am now running dnsmasq on my linux server, works way better than this routers DHCP server in terms of managing network addresses, I didn't want to set a static IP on my MacBook's Airport since I take it out with me / Teather it to my phone. I'm lazy, I would rather go the full mile and set up a custom DNS/DHCP Server and manage it all myself - So I turn on my computer, get the IP I want, all services are already forwarded to me, all without changing the network settings on my MacBook everytime I switch networks.
