So I signed up for Telecom a few months ago, and my IP has never changed. even after restarting my router etc.
I am on the PRO plan, so I called and asked if I can have dynamic IP, and they said everybody new who signs up is stuck on a static IP and it cant be changed.

Why are they doing this?? anyone else have the same problem?

The issue I have with this, is I run a small web server with teamspeak, minecraft and FTP backend to maintain the web server, well according to my logs my IP has been hammered a few times by hackers trying to login as administrator, usually i'd just restart my modem if there was anything like this, to get a change of IP, but now I cant.

Is it a true static? Or is it like Slingshot's and requires a 12 hours disconnection to get assigned a new IP address.

You can't hide from scripted attacks (e.g. bots) no matter what IP address you have.  They scan subnets for open ports and then run scripted attacks against those that publish any services (like web servers).  If you have open services you have to expect this.  Just tighten up security. Even block IP's that are constant attackers ...  whole CIDR's if need be.

PS: Running native FTP as a service over the internet is just asking for trouble.

I wonder if this has anything to do with no more IP4 addresses left in the world?

my ip changes when i reset router.. dont have to wait more then a few seconds. im on the plan below yours.. advance 20gb...

I check the telecom plan and pricing info and it does say this... so it seems its NON-static unless you ask otherwise when joining it. perhaps those indians on the helpdesk have it wrong LOL.. if they foreign help cant help always ask to be put through to the new Zealand team.. Ive had that a few times then you get better phone help without going around in circles.. overseas help cant even test a line.. they have to call nz team in auckland to help LOL

==== PRO plan on telecom.com website.. so if it says this you can demand a static one as it hasnt been update if they have changed it to static by default

Static IP

  • A static IP address on this plan can be requested for free

  • Static IP addresses are IP addresses that do not change. A customer who has a static IP address attached to their Telecom username will get the same Internet IP address every time their router connects to the Internet

  • Static IP addresses are most commonly requested by customers who want to run an Internet server, or who need to connect to another computer from the same IP address for authentication reasons

@m1k30rz: unless you have specifically requested a 'Static IP', you will have an IP address which is very very very stable.  In english, it will behave like a static IP, but it could change at Telecom's discetion at any time.  A Static IP will never change.

Not everyone on Telecom Broadband has an address with this behaviour yet, but it will become an increasing trend ... at least in the short term.

I believe Doozy is going to get in contact with you about getting your IP address changed.

@jjnz1: this has nothing to do with IPv4 exhaustion.

If you're getting lots of random login attempts, firewall off the offending IPs or use something like fail2ban

I don't recall telecom outsourcing their contact centre in India.

They don’t.

It’s a pretty common misconception (and dare I say, a little bit racist perhaps?) for people to just blindly assume that somebody with a ‘foreign’ accent can’t possibly be a NZer.

In fact, if you are getting a guy with an Indian sounding accent then he is based in NZ with almost 100% certainty.

(The way you can tell if you are probably speaking to a non-NZ based person on the telecom helpdesk is if they have an American accent)

I've visited one of the Telecom call centres in Heresford St, Auckland last year, and accompanied an operator while answering some calls.

Telecom also employs people from different ethnic groups, locally, so that they can better understand those customers who need assistance when English is not their primary language.

Didn't they shift something to Manilla?

@Daylo true, and what do you mean about native FTP as service? the FTP server only has access to HTDOCS which has virtually nothing (its more a "hello this is a minecraft server")

@cbrpilot oh okay, so this is just the "new" way of doing things for everyone? or is it while somethings been worked on?

thanks for help and advice people :)

It'll be around for a while, but maybe not forever.  How's that for a non-committal answer? :)

I think 018 / Yellow Pages is in Manilla, but that's not owned by Telecom anymore.

Some of the back-end services are (or were) offshore, but nothing customer facing from what I understand.
