I had a THOMSON TG585v7 router, but it is now in Australia to be used by my partner. I have one also at home, and was trying to see how to configure it, but I got the message:

You cannot directly edit the service settings of your Thomson Gateway. Please log in as a user that has the necessary privileges and run the Configuration Wizard.

in the configuration area, which I presume is where I am suppose to put in the user and password.

Has anyone successfully configured this router? I telnet into the router and saw that there is a user called tech under the group technicalsupport, but even as an administrator, I am unable to modify that user.

Do I need to do a factory reset before I can gain full access to the router? Or does anyone know what the tech user password is so that I can reconfigure the router?

Thanks in advance

The TG585's have no default username or password to access the configuration, you can add these. It appears that this has been added, so I suggest to factory reset. Hold a pin or paperclip in the reset hole at the rear for about 7 seconds, until all the lights flash and go off.

I found out I had to be disconnected from the internet before I could change my user name and password. But the problem I have another problem now. Does anyone know how I can change the VCI and VPI? It appears this is different in Australia, and the modem that my partner has will not work when she plugs it in.

I haven't had a look at the config file yet, I hope at least if it cant be done through the gui, at least it can be changed either through telnet, or manually configuring the configuration file.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure it's just in the usual "Broadband connection" settings page. You will have to log in as administrator. The default password is admin

I don't actually have one of these modems, but I have set quite a few up for friends.

If I remember correctly, on most settings pages there is a 'view mode', 'details mode', and a 'configure mode'. If it's available for the settings page you are on, it will be in the top right of the page.

Just follow your nose to the correct settings page, and then change to configure mode.
