I've been propping up a failing windows media center in the living room with foul dark magics for some time. Larger fans, under and over volting, fiddling with tech setup, fiddling with software install, so the damn thing keeps going while its replacement forms in a pile.
The pieces of the new media center lie in anti-static bags next to it, lacking...brain. (Okay, lacking brain and memory, if we're going to be completely honest). This new processor would push the project into completion. It would live again! My wife would stop complaining about crashes that took out the recording of her favourite programmes. Wonder and joy would fill the house once more!
It would be a Goodness.

my partner and i have been running an old dell desktop alongside a dell laptop of the same age for many years now. upgrading has always been talked about but has remained on hold while our new house was being built. we're now only a few weeks away from moving in and high on the list is an upgrade. the house is wired-for-sound (and video and data and phones and blah blah) and we're wanting to be able to store and serve media throughout the house as well as have a central repository for general file storage etc. i'm not too familiar with the PC build process but like the idea of customising. a decent processor is a must of course! plus, who can resist the possibility of free stuff!
I would like to win the i5 to be able to start building a new system for my daughter whose ailing Athlon 2400+ has decided to hit the dust.....If you able to throw in a MB and Ram and HArd drive and ........
Currently I'm using my PC with dual core processor to stream to my 2 xbox 360's, via Windows 7 MC. I have a Hauppauge PVR150 and HVR4000 which I use for FreeviewHD, 2gig of DDR3 Ram, a 150gig HDD and 2x DVD drives which I would love to put together into another HTPC. I would hopefully enjoy getting it running with my MySkyHDi unit and streaming to the xbo360 in my bedroom and my son's one aswell.
The ability to watch TV on my HTPC and then view the TV guide without having the entire computer grind to a halt would be very pleasing. Also the ability to watch DivX/Xvid content without stuttering or losing sync between the audio and video would make everyone in my house like me and my HTPC project a lot more.
I think this processor would fit the bill quite nicely.
I had been planning to build a Mega computer with my two teenage boys for nearly a year now – but had to put the plan on hold as the processor and display card were pushing us over the budget.
My kids were gutted when I returned home from last year's Geekzone Pizza Evening and not had won the Intel Core i7 kit that Geekzone was giving away!
If we win the i5 – we can restart the project over Easter Holidays from where we left off: It will be a fantastic learning opportunity for the boys – and a great excuse for me to tinker for weeks perfecting the beast until the computer's Windows Experience Index goes off the scale !!
What am I going to do with the computer once it is complete? It will replace the ageing Toshiba Tecra the kids have been using - and allow them to do their homework faster so they have more time play games with it that REALLY make use of the i5!!.
I need an excuse to justify upgrading the Home PC to the wife. Having a I5 chip should placate the accounting monster's wrath (at least until the bill for the new MB and ram arrives).

I am still using a single core and love playing around with virtual machines. With an i5 and some extra memory I would have more resources to distribute to my VM's. This would really help as some of my Virtual Machines serve a purpose, like my Virtual Trixbox that connects to the awesome VFX service from Xnet.
I would use it to build a new HTPC/Gaming PC. The current one has dual duties of running XBMC on my HiDef LCD via HDMI and SPDif, while playing games through my monitor and headphones. However the years olf CPU just isn't up to the job of decodig .mkvs while playing games, and usually the movies suffer. I've been a student for the past 4.5 years so money has been tight so my machine is currently based on items I bought years ago and hand-me-downs.
