I'd agree that in my mind, removing the active/trending would see a drop in overall participation. I use those lists to browse for interesting topics to read or participate in. It gives a but of a pulse of the site.
I pretty much only ever use live.geekzone - it has a good balance of topics I'm interested in or participating in, and up-and-coming new topics.
I don't think the Forums page offers anything near the usability of the live.geekzone page, to be honest. I only ever go there if I'm trying to find a particular topic, maybe once a month.
The main page has 2/3 of the top part of the screen taken up with News and Reviews, which are pretty static and to me, that is wasted space.

Another idea to increase usability - having an option to collapse/hide all of the details at left so that short messages don't have all that wasted space. This would reduce scrolling by a huge amount.

I don't really use the homepage... the news and reviews are nice, but fairly static so don't add too much value, although when there's something interesting there I read it. I do use that right hand discussions panel a lot. Generally I browe to the forums page and just open each of the forums I'm interested in in a new tab.
Today I learned live.geekzone exists, and I can guarantee I'll be using that a lot more. It's a great snapshot of activity and discussions to poke my head in to, so I wouldn't be opposed to that being on the homepage.
+1 for an improved mobile experience. I usually browse on my work laptop (shhh) or on my phone while on the train etc so improved mobile experience would be nice.

How have I only just discovered live.geekzone today? As a bonus if you bookmark the live.geekzone page and navigate to it, when you click on the logo in the top left it takes you back to live.geekzone.co.nz and not geekzone.co.nz.
Brilliant
josephhinvest: I never look at the homepage TBH. My bookmark is for the “New forum posts” page that’s really the only page I ever look at. I read the forums several times a day and that’s the most useful page for me to scan down to see the most recent posts
Cheers,
Joseph
I'm in the same boat, I couldn't tell you the last time I viewed the home page or the Forums main page (aside from just now to compare them for this post!). The New Forum Posts page *is* my home page on GZ.
Why?
The main home page is, imo, cluttered and overwhelming - too many columns, too much text, and the only images are the ads (which go if you're subscribed, of course). But with varying between about 35 and 50 articles, topics, or similar links to click, there is just so much that nothing grabs my attention. Please, don't take this negatively, just trying to explain why the current home page is not one I use.
The forums home page just doesn't give me enough visibility of activity to know what to look at. SO I look for the ones with the little 'New' flag - in which case I may as well use the New Forum Posts page to see the actual topics of interest, rather than have an extra level of 'What's in the box?'.
I fully get both these pages have their place, I just feel the current home page could do with a rethink of it's design, and feel the Forum home - to me, at least - is more useful for fairly new members still finding their way around, and potentially looking at older content etc.

Whoa, to both of you. Something that's been here for at least 15 years...

I am not unhappy with the current layout and content of Geekzone. I have notifications set and usually follow email links to discussions I am participating in. After that I may check the home page and politics forums. I rarely look at trending topics.

Honestly no idea how I've missed it TBH, I've been here under an old account for probably almost that amount of time too. But it's truly a great future, and something I wish more communities had, and I love it.
I missed the live.geekzone page too, so maybe making that more obvious could be an option. I will probably use it as my default before you make a change, as I mostly just look at the live discussion panel on the current homepage.
As others have mentioned, keeping the trending discussions on the front page (whatever that ends up being) would be a priority if you wanted continued engagement in a variety of topics. Thus if you made the current forums page the new home, you should probably replace the News panel with the live discussion panel from the current home page.
Heh, I haven't used live before either, though I think I have seen it before. I think I'd use that a bit too.
I quite like the Home Page as it is, with its mixture of Reviews, News and active Forum Discussions. However, I think the Blog section could go - not really used by anyone and even the BDFL has abandoned it as a blogging platform.
Really not sure how many of you missed the Geekzone Live link though. Yellow highlighted box and all...

Agreed, I would prefer to see the blogs gone. Could be used for something more productive given it's been all but abandoned.
