Looking for some of your comments, please. Throwing ideas around.

What would you say we replace the current homepage (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/default.asp) and make the forums page (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp) our new home?

The idea is to make it more community focused. Feedback welcome.

I quite like the Geekzone Live and Trending discussions, I always end up reading most of the threads.  The news/reviews sometimes offers things I look at but not as often.

Hmmm

Maybe a section where it shows threads you've posted to and it would update if there are new posts. Would show the top ten.

Personally I see nothing wrong with the layout itself but it could be s bit more lively and maybe a few of the sections(such as blogs and reviews and news) could be more frequent and need more content to make the default page more relevant and more community focused.

The problem I see is the fact the homepage does display active content such as latest discussions (except Politics) and also trending discussions. That is personally how I found this for example.

I know there is Geekzone Live but my concern about jumping straight into the forums page is how for example would I see this topic at a glance? The forums page in its current state doesn't show this unless if you go into Geekzone Live. You could perhaps put a condensed version of Geekzone Live above this showing maybe the top 5 instead of 20 but also I think things will get buried rather quickly if that was done.

The balance is rather good currently with finding new topics, and tracking topics.

I quite like this part about your subscribed threads, would make it really easy.

How about the 'landing page' is a vamped up version of the user control panel?  You could keep your navigation bar as you have now but have columns in the main area (where news, reviews currently is) for subscribed topics, 'Geekzone Live' and Trending discussions.

That would cover the three main things I look at when I drop in to Geekzone before heading in to the forums itself.

Same here. At the very least it should be an option people could pick if I was getting a vote.

I like it as it is. It’s calm, clear and easy to focus on the latest posts. The forums page is too white, busy and distracting to land on IMHO.

Off Topic. What I do wish there was is a way to save a post for future reference. Often there’s a great link or advice on a product or how to fix something and it gets forgotten and lost. Google news have this feature where you click on the hamburger and a drop down menu gives an option to 'save for later.' You view it in your saved stories.

I'd much rather have better mobile experience than any other feature. Geekzone is a pretty horrible mobile experience for me.

Yes, I know it's a dead horse I'm flogging.

I'd personally like to see "your forum topics" on the front page somewhere.

I typically scan the right most column, or click my username to get to my profile to see 'your forum topics'.

News, blogs and reviews take up a lot of space on the HP and aren't what I come here for.

I never look at the homepage TBH. My bookmark is for the “New forum posts” page that’s really the only page I ever look at. I read the forums several times a day and that’s the most useful page for me to scan down to see the most recent posts

Cheers,
Joseph

I prefer the current home page. You might tweak it to be more forum focused as that's what GZ is mostly about to me, but having the articles, blogs, etc together on the home page is good.

Honestly, if this change was made I would visit less frequently. The current discussions and trending discussions are a must have. I only navigate to the forums page if I want to visit the politics forum (very rare!) or I’m trying to find an old post.

The site however is in desperate need of a better experience on mobile.

For those things I suggest Pocket. You can create folders and stash these away - and easier to search too.

Looks like I'm in the minority but I have the forums page booked marked and that's what I go to, hardly ever go to the actual homepage.  I'm here for the forums.

I have the home page bookmarked, but I only ever look at the rightmost column. But if people are making use of the other columns then don't make them disappear; I'm happy enough with it as it is.

Personal preference I guess but I like the current default as I enjoy getting in involved in the most recent/active discussions

Guess it comes down to if you're into lurking sub forums or getting amongst it

perhaps an option in your profile to choose what you prefer? though it could get lost in there
