plod: Well the way I see it, is that without members there is no geekzone. After all its the members that answer the questions and contribute to the site. So I don't see why I would want to pay too help people out. I do realise the forum isn't the only part of geekzone.

Hmmm... Spend a lot of time here and really have no excuse for not subscribing....

Perhaps it is kiwis aversion to paying for anything online.

We are used to getting it free and surfing with ads.... All the major newspapers are free online (with ads).

Subscriber sites haven't gone well in NZ in the past.... I think it will have to come to the web eventually (it is slowly turning that way overseas).

I don't block ads.

Cheers, Matt.

Once I am no longer a student and get a job I will seriously consider subscribing to this site and others that I use.

I subscribe to take advantage of using the site with no ads, as I spend a fair amount of time on here and just hate ads in general, as well as to help with the running costs. I suppose because I use it I feel I should support it, especially also because (as mentioned above) it's not run by a large corporation.

If Vodafone, for example, decided to start offering a subscription service for their forums then there's no way in hell I would contemplate paying for it, regardless of the amount.

I personally think $60 for the year is quite reasonable.

Oh, and the motivation for me to subscribe was when you opened the site up at the end of last year for a month(?) to give everyone the benefits of being a subscriber and I was able to see how fast the site loaded with no ads versus with ads.

No I don't. They really don't bother me.Now if the ads were intrusive or slowed the site down, then that might be a different story. I fully understand the reason for the need of ads.

I'm in the same boat as plod I think. A couple more comments, I don't block ads as they really don't annoy them, my own brain generally does the filtering for me :P :P
(though on occasion I have clicked ads if they really catch my eye)

raab: Reasons why I don't subscribe, being brutally honest.

Access to private forums; - Don't know if there's more than 1, but I don't care about off topic forums for subscribers
Personal Tag under your name in the forums; - Don't care
100 MB of disk space for image storage (automatically resized for best use in our forums or on your Geekzone Blog); - I have a server in a euro DC with 100mbit link and 1tb space
Image gallery for use in your Geekzone Blog "Random Picture" feature; - Don't care
Advertising free option for browsing Geekzone; - What ads? I use adblock
Up to ten private forums, with invite-only access that you manage for each individual forum
- Don't care

All in all I don't see what benefit there is subscribing other than the good feeling that you're helping with hosting on top of the revenue you earn from ads.

I asked a question both here and GPforums and got more answers from GPforums. I was under the impression that there were more people in that industry on here than GPforums but obviously mistaken.

In short, there has to be more features to make the $60 subscription worthwhile and attractive.

You are talking about $60/year = $5/month for a completely ad free Geekzone (which may I say load really fast because we don't even embed the code so your page is actually smaller)?

Yes. I spent probably probably 5-6 hours (or less) of my time in one month on geekzone. This is only when I want to find or read about something. Sure, the page may load faster with the subscription... but i use multiple tabs. It is my habit to open every links - in the background (using Opera here) and revisit those slow loading pages 5-10 mins later.

Curious, how much money do websites acutally make from ads (have never investigated)

Say someone spent 20 hours a month on this site, viewing topics, posting replies. how much money would that bring the website from ads only?

I have no idea... It depends on lots of different factors - page views for ads that pay per impression, clicks on ads that pay per click, country, city...

Same for me. Small price to pay for having faster page loads (and I hate browser extensions). Plus, I know good hosting doesn't come cheap.

With the exception of no ads (which, lets be honest, can be blocked) there's nothing offered that interests me. (While on the topic: ads don't chew through $7/mth of bandwidth, and if the pages load too slowly with them, I feel more inclined to visit less and show less support for such a site.)

Basically, I'd rather spend my money on something that actually gives me something I don't already have (such as an extra 4GB or so, or a cheap VPS)

The reason I ask is that if a person spent a large amount of time on the site would they generate more than $60 a year thus provide a better income than if they subscribed?

Do you know which ads generate income by simply loading and which by clicking on them?

If you know which ones you get income by clicking then I wouldn't mind clicking on them from time to time to help you out! Money mouth
