freitasm: My eyes! Do we need those huge screenshots?

I used width="100%" on them... (by the way, this makes it perfect for large pictures as the width scales down with browser windows, so I like it)

Shrinking them down then...

Fraktul: Sans Telecom Ad my CPU usage is now 2-5% on GZ. :)

When exactly did the Telecom Ads disappear?

The ads were paused today at 6:02pm.

OK then... dismiss my previous remark. Embarassed

For what it's worth I don't care about the ads being there as I know the site has to have a revenue stream to stay alive.  I also don't care about CPU cycles going up as that's what they're supposed to do...

I'm running Vista on an HP machine with 2gb RAM and an AMD Turion64 x2.  For me, there has been no real discernable difference in the speed of loading pages over the last week and I'm in the Solomon Islands - a third world country with limited telecommunications.

GZ loads fine (when the internet is available) and doesn't have any adverse affects that I've noticed in terms of performance. Laughing

To be honest, I've never noticed it [the slowness with the ads] on firefox on the mac... or windows. Must just be me.

To be honest I haven't seen anyone complaining about speeds - only about CPU utilisation, which for me is a moot point. If the website is still responsive, and if the machine is still responsive, then why worry (TM)?

I've noticed since the Telecom banner ad has been replaced with the current ones,  the CPU usage on my lab PC where all this started has dropped to <10% after the main forum screen has been loaded.

freitasm: You think Geekzone is heavy? Try this page and look at the source code...

SStuff website is huge... Undecided

I have noticed that while i am taking holidays and using this site at different times of day, the evening becomes very slow while daytime is very quick. Maybe geekzone is getting too popular?

Time to find a new industry!

Nope. The average server utilisation is around 30% during evenings, with spikes of course, but nothing that goes for longer than a second. I guess it is more related to all New Zealanders jumping in front of their home PCs in the evenings, starting all their torrents, pr0n download and etc...

Just an update and perhaps on topic, from my blog today:

John Clegg (Zoomin, Projectx) has posted a series of tables showing the heavy and the lite New Zealand websites.

Lucky Geekzone shows up in the light sites list as #10 with a 97.2 kilobytes payload (not counting images) and eight JS files (mainly Google Analytics, Nielsen//NetRatings, Statcounter). The heaviest page in the list is vouchermate.co.nz site with 1.3 MB!

Check Jonh's blog post for lots of good information!
