It is frustrating when features you like disappear.

Everyone has a different user experience and I suspect it's based partly on the browser you use.

As someone who accesses Geekzone from a laptop and via mobile devices I appreciate having the same layout no matter what device I use.

I found the mobile site didn't work for me and the desktop site worked well for me on my mobile devices.

quickymart: I second that. My personal opinion is the extra features aren't worth the difficulty I'm having reading the site now. I think the mobile version was a lot tidier and easier to read. Just my 2c.

I disagree but that is also my personal opinion. The mobile site was from eons ago when Pocket PC was still a thing and didn't scale well on newer devices. It used to drive me crazy when one of the many sandboxed browsers on my iPhone would direct me to the mobile site and the problem is from here it was cached so there was no going back to the regular site.

When removing an old feature there is always going to be people who disagree with the change but the majority does indeed use the full site even on mobile (including myself).

Quite a few things here.

Admin control. I can fully empathise with the technical reasons behind the changes. I know nothing about the backend, but wonder if it is the software that does not allow the granular control over user posts that you desire. Would a different backend give you what you want?

Desktop vs mobile. I have 30 sites on my Opera android speed dial page, including other forum sites. ALL of them render to a mobile version of the desktop site. Well, all except GZ. There are some other sites that I do not look at on my mobile like fordforums.com.au as they render full desktop as per the new GZ. Note the negative aspect in that sentence.

User numbers. It is indeed likely that the desktop users outnumber the mobile users as most will be using the work/home PC to access the site. It would be interesting to see the percentage of mobile users that stayed on the mobile version of the site when they were using it on a mobile. You may or may not have that sort of stats available.

Correct rendering vs usability. The GZ desktop site renders beautifully on mobile and I can read everything – as long as my eyeball is 8 cm from the screen with my glasses off (I measured). However, this is hardly normal behaviour and at normal reading distance, screens are impossible to read. My score: Rendering 10/10, usability 1/10.

Browsers. Browsers seem to fit into two camps where the rendering is almost identical is each camp. (I installed a few additional browsers to check them out.)

Big and ugly, but readable. Chrome, Edge. As seen in a screenshot in an earlier post by Mauricio.

Tiny and impossible to read. Opera, Firefox, Dolphin. The sceenshot below shows this shows you beautifully the page renders, but remember it is only 68 mm wide on the mobile, at which point it becomes unreadable. If on the PC, try zooming out. How anyone can call this usable is beyond me. [Edit. Changed this paragraph to make more sense of the screendump below. I didn't think it would appear so huge when posted.]

But the thing about Opera (on Android), is that text reflow actually works when you zoom in and out, so you can size it however you want for readability. I gave up trying to use other browsers to read the full site on my mobile, because text reflow has been crippled, however Opera works just fine and I've been using it that way for a long time and never went near the mobile site.
