DjShadow: Xtra took their time to update their DNS, but working finally

Because Xtra didn't have to update their DNS. They cached the entry for as long as they were told to originally by the authoritative server for geekzone.co.nz Once that entry expired, they then requested the address again and updated the cache with the new information, again for as long as the authoritative server for geekzone.co.nz said.

Sorry to nitpick, but it's my pet peeve that people think "DNS Propagates" or similar.

Actually one out of five of our NS didn't update. I had all set to 15 mins but with conflicting info I guess they just used the old info. I removed the rogue NS from the list and it seemed to fix it.

that makes little sense, you update the zone file and reload, the updated zone goes to all slaves. Unless the registry contains NS that arent in your zone setup?

I got an email from the forum mid afternoon and clicking the link responded with a 404, as did queries for www.geekzone.co.nz - however this appeared to be resolved by the time I checked again this evening.

PS: muppet, as much as I agree with you, there are players out there whos NS ignore set TTLs (or so it is reported). I for one simply choose not to do business with them..

That just means that Xtra was caching the bogus info it was being told. Anyway... I will shut up, like I said, I keep seeing this myth that DNS propagates or that someone's DNS servers were slow etc. That's never the case because DNS doesn't work like that.

vodafone/ihug DNS servers are still caching so much for ttl... HOSTS file to the rescue!

One question - you are now routing through datacom on the APE and they aren't listed as being on the IPv6 APE so does that mean IPv6 either no longer works or routes internationally? I'm coming in from WxC and ICONZ.

Read a few pages back. No ipv6 at datacom's new DC yet (coming soon or something).

The problem with hosts files is that transparent proxies may not understand those requests - it seems to be the case with Telecom's proxies...

I think I mentioned it earlier but a neat trick for dns stragglers is run a cheap linux vps at ICONZ with the old ip address for a week or so.

Use apache/nginx to proxy (like a reverse proxy) to your new ip address ie: your Windows 2008 server(s) running IIS at datacom.

Geekzone have disabled their IPv6 Records as you are indeed right, Datacom does not have IPv6 yet.
Fingers crossed they should do soon, everyone should have IPv6 by now >.<

I will state here as i have in other forums/mail lists, we honor DNS TTL, we do not ignore or modify it.
I am happy to dispel such myths about our service.

If you believe this not to be the case then please send me the details via PM and it will get looked into.
