Geektastic:

Also, can we ban certain books from being discussed? List to follow. 😉

Following on from that thought, howzabout we have ourselves a little book burning party?

none of these address my original statement:

I can only think of 3 users I'd like to block for consistent inflammatory and/or useless threads, and constant political left/right/left/right user bashing which would be awesome to have [Filtered] as suggested by Freitasm earlier in this thread.

It's truely not about whether or not I agree with their views, but more that their needless twit/twoo detracts from the central OP discussion so consistently.

Alternately, could we add a FUG (like Godwins) to specifically partition the Trump debate into the Trump thread? Seems like these days just about every other thread more than 2 pages degenerates into a pro/bash Trump discussion again... respectfully, is Trump the new Godwins candidate?

This thread is a great example of the problem in itself, it has degenerated into belittling jokes and given the pattern of +1s, the echo chamber that so many fear, already exists. I'm not a precious snowflake, but I know bullying when I see it. It is starting to feel more like the stuff.co.nz comments section lately round here.

Hey may I request a feature where I only see posts from people who wholeheartedly support my opinions please? I'm often triggered when someone disagrees with me and I need GZ to be my safe space. I can provide a list of issues and my opinions on them upon request so I'm able to be matched with the members who agree with me.

And you can call it TinderGeek. :)

Have you reported any examples of this bullying (either towards yourself or others), to the mods? If so, have they done something about it?

I feel our admins do a great job at filtering out trolls and people who fit that description.

I think that having the option to ignore some usernames is detrimental to this community. Freedom of speech and everything else aside, It removes the context of what people are discussing. It also allows the user to create a "censored" world of their own they can tailor to their liking which sounds pretty DPRK to me.

I have a suggestion which is similar to what we had on a Forum I administered, that is, we separate the Off Topic and similar sub Forums from technical discussions into say a "Community Discussions" sub-forum. The Community Discussion could be coded out of Geekzone live so not displaying on the front page. On the Forum I admin'd the Community Discussion was only open to registered members. One would have to then decide if you wanted to enter the twilight zone or not.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The boorish posts I find very tiresome. I guess that's one way to defend a point, but would be nice for some to learn to discuss, rather than come back all guns blazing with putdowns and a string of adjectives when someone disagrees. Or maybe they cannot handle opposition?

So do I just start a 'report' on all the OT comments (especially the ones that go "all Trump") and hope for the best?

gzt: It's a good example where rational discussion and the weight of evidence may have changed the beliefs and opinions of contributors.

Its a good example of a thread that most level headed people will simply ignore.

There were a good number of Pro-Trump people contributing initially. That seemed to tail off in line with Trump's decreasing approval ratings.

In an ideal world i suppose we should "report" comments that do not belong where they are.
Whether that will fix the problem, I dont know but its a step in the right direction than just muting everyone as all i see that will create is an elitist society.

Most likely will be abused the heck out of and no one will want to know about us. I would hate to think what the lurkers think of this idea.
I feel its a complete turn off, Who would want to join a community that will mute you if your ideas dont match theirs? We are a group of geeky very strong minded and hard headed individuals where our social skills can sometimes lack. Clashes will happen but we all need to know how to be mature and fair about things.

The first issue you are referring to two users making entirely personal comments at each other. It's pointless and contributes nothing to the discussion. If they are not listening ask a mod.

The second is simply going off topic. That's always a fine line. On a recent occasion both you and I asked to move it to the Trump thread and it carried on. It was kind of relevant, so it's a fine line.

There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and bullying them. Some may see disagreement as bullying, and to some extent it will always be a matter of definition. But if you really feel some in a thread are going too far, but a mod doesn't agree with you and take action, there remains always the option to just disengage and unsubscribe from the thread in question. You don't have to just sit there and take it if you don't like it.

I probably qualify as a lurker and I do read a significant number of threads, but very rarely comment, I often open a reply window and then think 'why bother'. I do +1 users, these up-votes aren't based on the user but if I can see a valid point, even if and the user may be someone I disagree with on many things. Many of the topics mentioned earlier in this thread have some relation to politics and or something potentially divisive and as with politics in general, there appears to be a trend towards division and a refusal to even consider why other people may view things differently.

I especially dislike the trend to belittle or dismiss based on someones age, race or gender, none of which may accurately reflect someones life experience.

I think its a good thing on this forum to have such a diverse range of people with different opinions - this is key, and I believe some people on the forum need to remember that much of what is said are just that - opinions and preferences. I may not always agree with what I read, but I wouldn't expect to block anyone as I believe even things I might disagree with shouldn't be rejected out of hand.
