Its not much in the grand scheme of things, but (and I don't wish to be rude and put words in your mouth), if you went to one of you favourite places for a cup of coffer and it cost $2.08 and the next time you go back it cost $5 would you really be happy with that ?

I go to my favourite place every day to get a cup of coffee. That would be an increase on every day coffee.
This is an increase of one cup of coffee a month on a website that you have been visiting for the last nine years.
No one is saying you have to get a subscription. It's something you will do if you think there's value in the exchange and even so it's not a requirement. You obviously don't see the value in the exchange, so I am not sure why you are even here.

I think Geekzone is great. I'm just saying the percentage increase is significant, even if the absolute amount is tiny.

At least you are not like someone who replied to my email with a "Your site is useless" despite being registered and active.
Yes, the emails I send out have a valid reply address. I treat everyone like a human.

I would no doubt register as useless if you had an entrance test to ensure that you do actually have to be a geek to join...

Perhaps one thing that might have negatively influenced the site revenue in the ad marketplace is the name "Geekzone" and how advertising agencies put no time in actually understanding the audience they are targeting.
Even though it's been 19 years, with more than 200,000 visitors a month (which is a considerable number of New Zealanders over the years), there are still agencies that ask "What?" and "Why?"
But say Facebook and they rain money on it.

And yet, ironically (?), I've never used / will use Facebook but use this site every day (despite moaning a bit about money, its one of about 4 that I contribute too despite not having too). You'd think they'd go for a site that seems to attract a generally intelligent (with obvious exceptions...well exception anyway), fairly well off bunch.

The new subscription is live now and I will email everyone soon. The only changes are terms and price.
I am retiring the $25/year and $125/lifetime subscriptions. I am introducing the $5/month subscription.
The $25/year subscription was really a token value. I am updating to a $60 value that is paid on a monthly basis - the price of a cup of coffee per month. This also gives subscribers the ability to cancel subscriptions as needed for their reasons but restart sooner if they can - unlike the old yearly one, which would affect revenue for us.
Current subscribers have to wait until their expire date before creating a new subscription.
Looked upon as an annual increase some may say OMG but taken down to the lowest denominator it comes out at $0.16 per day. I would lose 10x that per day in change into that mysterious place where small change and the other sock of a pair disappears. I will find that place one day and be a millionaire and have all the odd socks I can eat.
I can understand the decision as cash flow is vital for small businesses.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Not really. Advertisers like technically unsophisticated types who go 'ohhhh' when they see pretty lights and make purchasing decisions on impulse. Generally intelligent fairly well off types are much more critical and well-informed when deciding which gadget they like.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos
Is the lifetime subscription option gone? Is it likely to come back soon?

Just re-subscribed (now that its monthly I just wanted to align with other monthly bills)

I do have to admit that even at the higher amount, I'd still prefer it be annual. Keeping track of tons of monthly subscriptions is like death by a thousand papercuts. It's not a surprise that it had to be increased, with inflationary pressures etc, but being only monthly is kinda disappointing.
