Here is an example.

Say a poster posted something. Then another poster posted "Only uneducated idiots and fools believe that"  That's basically saying that the OP is an uneducated idiot and fool, as are anyone else sharing his opinion.

That could be classed as bullying, or being mean. Whether the poster uses that tactic to stress his point, or intimidate, or as he/she can't deal with being disagreed with is unknown. But it turns a discussion into an insult fest. Some retort back. Some remove themselves from the discussion, which is a loss.  I will freely admit that I have been ticked off for retorting back. On that occasion I didn't call a spade a spade, but I implied it, and got ticked off, which I accept.

Bullying is sticking someones head down the loo and flushing it, not posting opinions that they disagree with...!

LOL

So your saying that commenting ""Only uneducated idiots and fools believe that" is merely a disagreement with your post? Interesting

This is an interesting example but I don't think it is exactly as you are suggesting. If I say "you are an uneducated idiot and fool for believing that", then I am making an insult, but if I say "only uneducated idiots and fools believe that" I am merely venturing an opinion. That is a legitimate stance. Off-topic is almost nothing but opinion, and if people were banned from venturing one just because others don't like it, there wouldn't be much of a debate.

As I see this example, the insult exists if it is "only uneducated idiots and fools believe that". It is heavily implied to the poster that you replied to, plus everyone who is not in agreement with you.

I agree re OT and opinion, but opinion is one thing, insults are another. You could disagree with me by offering your opinion, and why. You don't need to add an insult though. If you didn't add the insult , we and others can continue to discuss. If you added the insult, that either breaks or partially breaks the discussion, or its daggers out to trade insults, until Mods step in

It's insulting perhaps but that isn't bullying.

I think bullying has to be personal. So if a User A responds to User B's every post with "You are a retard who should crawl into a hole and die a slow death" then that would be bullying.

That is ignoring the concept that, as adults, we are (or ought to be) capable of ignoring that sort of drivel if we need to: we aren't all weedy teenagers suffering an existential crisis whose minds will snap if ever anyone on line says anything nasty to us, I would hope.

I'm repeating this because it really defines the difference between bullying and insulting.

Either way, that adds very little to the discussion. It almost inevitably reduces the quality of the discussion. When the target responds in kind it can easily get to two pages of purely personal back and forth.

Zero new information added. There are only two or three people who do that. Might as well be private messages.

I've occasionally asked users engaged in that to stop. Next time I'll PM a mod with "pointless back and forth userone, usertwo" or something like that. It's almost indistinguishable from spam.

I had users send me PM asking to having their accounts closed because they see "too much bullying in the off topic discussions" - as if the people participating didn't have an option to ignore the topics, or as if people were being mean to the others by showing how their posts/ideas were wrong or misguided.

OMG! Do you just shrug and close accounts of people who are that precious ,or do you firstly point out that they could ignore said topics?

Probably the only user on here that I personally find particularly irritating and arrogant is one who often reminds us that he's a lawyer. However, even if there was a feature to ignore certain users, I wouldn't use it on him as I prefer to just skip his posts.

I think it is probably better that we don't start identifying specific people. Otherwise this thread will go into a downward spiral very fast.

Yes. I think @gzt commented that there are only 3.

I can think of 3. One, I have had frequent animated discussions with. But I do respect the passion even if I do not agree on some topics. I have tried to show that, and we have established a mutual respect I feel. I plus 1 some posts, the other poster has too. So, while we are strong in our opinions, there is respect. The other poster of note is VERY strong on one topic. Ok, thats fine, I have been here long enough to see their other posts on other topics. I do feel IMHO that these posts on ONE topic are a bit over the top, but overall I respect that posters posts. I feel thats balance. The third, as noted in your post I agree.

I certainly agree. This thread, to outsiders, may cone across as "what goes on at GZ" But the animated issues are I feel, minor in quantity as in quantity of posters.

My previous post expands

Overall, this is a really great virtual community. I wouldn't be paying my measly twenty five credits a year if I didn't get something out of it and feel it was worth supporting.

Of course there is a wide range of opinions and views here. Anything too far out of line is usually very quickly dealt to, which is good.

Thanks to all the mods and our BDFL for keeping it that way.
