Going off topic here, but I find this one weird. I can understand you want structural markup (that is a good idea), but using a third level header tag for a post just doesn't make sense. How about a < P > tag ?

Edit: GZ ate my tag. Also I just looked up aria landmarks. They look like a nice idea.

It probably doesn't make sense to you because you're not a screen reader user.

When I listen to the header of a forum post, all I'm really interested in is who is posting. When I've established that, the objective is to skip to the body, as you would visually skip to it, then skip any quoted text.

Screen readers have the ability to move by heading with a key press. It is true, may do the job, but has the potential to be more ambiguous. Again, and Aria landmark may be a better way forward here.

How about another feature. Users with a subscription get the option to have a "full" body of a posted message sent to them for any manually or automaticly subscribed discussion ?

I feel your suggestion of more extensive use of heading tags will get messy very quickly (visually). However Aria landmarks could be implemented very easily.

The one down side of using Aria is that there is no hierarchy of landmarks. I understand that using a heading tag for the body may not be visually acceptable, but if each post could have a heading at the point where the user's name is, even at a really low level, and each body an aria landmark, that would be a very good solution.

Otherwise, aria is better than the status quo, for sure.

I don't subscribe and my eyes naturally avoid ads on web pages after years of training. I do donate to one free computer e-zine (TidBITS) so I'm not necessarily cheap. Perhaps giving people several options for donations might work. I wouldn't hesitate to chip in to keep the site running if the price was right. But there is a difference between donating to a forum and donating to a carefully researched and edited weekly e-zine.

I would look at subscribing to Geekzone to get ride of the ads, but as I have no way to pay for it and if I did have a way to pay for it, I am not allowed to pay for things on the internet any way.

Great to hear. It's one of those areas I'd like to understand better. But it's quite difficult to fully grasp or appreciate without feedback from someone such as yourself.

The good news is that ultimately it was very little effort to accommodate those changes, and I'm sure we can find other areas to extend Aria support around the site.

I'd be interested to hear about any other major pain points you've found.

I hope this hasn't been covered elsewhere in this thread as I haven't read every entry. A subscription gives one access to the Off Topic (Subscribers) Forum and no advertising.

I stop ads with Proxomitron, others use other ad blockers.

The mystery is in the content of the Off Topic (Subscribers) Forum which seems to be the main advantage of subscribing. If we were given a read-only view of that (even if only for a short time) it just may tempt some to subscribe who cannot resist commenting on the many wonderful issues discussed there.

Mind you the topics would have to be amazing to get many to subscribe. Still, I may be wrong on this, my hat is standing by.

The "non-ads while supporting Geekzone" is the main advantage of the subscription. The Off Topic forum is not used much. But you can create your own hidden forums. I know of a couple being very active but those are by invitation only.

Only subscribers can create a private forum, but non-subscribers have access on an invitation only basis.
