Apologies if this has already been covered, but I don't think the home page needs to be "community focused" but should do more to draw in new users; if that can be done while also creating more of a community vibe then that's great, but I don't think it should be the driving force.
It depends on what your purpose is - if it was my site, and my most pressing current issue was a drop in advertising revenue, I'd be focused on making the front page more appealing to new visitors and users; I, like many other regulars have also noted, very rarely come to the home page, but rather directly to the 'new posts' or 'live pages; amending the front page will have little or no impact on me.
But if I was a new visitor to the site I'm not sure how much I'd understand about the site - the site name would give me some sense of its focus (but at the same time also not give me an understanding of the breadth of topics being discussed), but I wouldn't see any explanation. The retort could be that many sites don't have this on their front page, but those ones typically have size/awareness on their side, plus often will have an "about us" page (eg Quora) that explains this (I can't see one for GZ in the footer, but perhaps there is somewhere else?).
In terms of drawing in people, I also wonder whether the use of a few select images could help; it's currently all text bar the ads. I understand that this contributes towards making it a really fast-loading site, but perhaps an exception could be made to the front page. (Again, noting the point that for many regular users any changes to the front page will have little or no impact).
I hope this is taken as it's intended, which is providing a few constructive suggestions - like everyone else here I want to see this site thrive, and if a bit of eye candy and explanatory text on/linked from the front page can help I'm all good with that...
