The subscription benefits are not attractive to me personally as they offer nothing of scarce value.  I'd rather have the two extra fancy coffee's from my favourite local cafe for the $7/month.

Techdirt has some great posts on modern business models that you might want take inspiration from:

I'd like to subscribe, but I have only the option to pay via PayPal and I'd rather just pay by my credit card. -_-'

And that's fine. You can pay with credit card without opening a Paypal account.

I don't get the option to pay via credit card though; I'm asked to either login to PayPal or to create a new PayPal account...

Just tried, and it said the same thing for me.

I believe it's because it's a subscription rather than a "regular" payment.

Is there an official answer to this?

I would like to subscribe, but I don't have a PayPal account and don't particularly want to create one!

Not automatic... You could always PM me and make a payment for a one year sub directly into our account.

(pompous-self-important mode)

As a subscriber, I'm happy to know I'm among a small, (self)-select group who can lay claim to showing genuine, sincere appreciation for Geekzone by contributing my hard-earned cash.

As a newcomer I know that I'll wait for a while before determining whether I should subscribe...and by then I may have built up a tolerance to ads and such, so it's really the 'Premium' features that would need to drive me to subscription.
