I don't know if its just me or if you have to reach a certain number of posts for more advanced features, but for a forum called "Geekzone" aimed at "geeks" (and I would guess run by "geeks"), the forum software being used seems very ... err, "low-rent" compared to what many other forums use these days ... there's not even any smilies (other than as topic icons), no poll options, no way to delete personal messages, mssing BBCodes (indent, list, and formatting like centre and code)etc.

There is some BBCODE support, and a feature rich editor with all those things you ask. No pool support but I never thought it interesting to have. You can delete/archive private messages (you're doing it wrong).

Maybe my web browser is just too old. I only get a very basic editor through either Quick Reply or Compose Reply. I can't see any forum prefernces option to change it to a "feature rich" version.

I did see the Archive option in the messages page, but haven't tired it since I though it only saved them away somewhere rather than deleting them.

I wouldn't say "browser too old" but instead you either have adblocker enabled, the profile option not set or Javascript disabled.

Ahh ... thanks I eventually found the option and tried it. Now I remember seeing that editor before and it doesn't work in my web browser - most likely because it's too old (Firefox 2.0), but is the newest version that runs on my ancient version of Mac OS X (10.2.8) which in turn is the newest I can (offciaily anyway) run on my ancient PowerMac G3.

Apologies for maligning the forum software, although I did say it might be just me. :-)

Wow, that's 12 years old - perhaps it's not the forum software that could be considered low rent.

With a G3, should be able to go to at least OS x 10.4 which gets you Firefox 3.6, then only 9 years old...

Love it how someone with a obsolete computer that is running out of date software has the nerve to bag a site that is most likely running on modern equipment with up to date software.

Its no different than trying to buy something from a vending machine with pennies and shillings and when it doesn't accept the coins blaming the machine.

Some people amaze me....

Nope. Officially the beige PowerMac G3 can only use up to Mac OX S 10.2.8.

Unofficially you can hack a newer version of Mac OS X to run, but it may be slow and buggy (10.2.8 is buggier than 10.1 was on this computer!). Since it is my work computer as well, I really don't have the time to muck around trying to get it to work nor want to waste money having to upgrade needed software I already have (even if I could find old versions that would work).

In many ways I'd have preferred to stick with Mac OS 9, but Vodafone refuse to fix their authentication server (the only ISP in the country I've found to have this issue), which means Mac OS 9 and earlier users can't even log on to their dial-up connections. :-(

As I said at the start: "I don't know if its just me..." :-\

Then again, there is other forum software that does look / work better and still works on even my ancient computer ... so this forums software partly to blame.

In my experience 10.2.6 is more stable than 10.2.8 on a beige. I'm not sure what to suggest in terms of browsers; I believe that Classilla will work in 10.2 but I haven't tried it myself.

I [obviously incorrectly] assumed a B&W G3 - the beige ones were introduced in 1997 - in my book, you're doing pretty well for a 17 year old computer.

OS X 10.4 was far better than 10.2 if you can get it going though.

IMO there's no need to insult Vodafone staff, I don't think that is called for.

Assuming there is an issue with dial up authentication affecting users with OSs older than 15 or so years, it's going to be such an infinitesimally small number of customers, it probably doesn't make economic sense to look at it. Whilst I accept there are a number of intances where dial up access is still a suitable technology, it's well on the way out, and at some point you have to make the call to drop support for older OSs - take XP for example next month.

LOL only 9 yo? Not picking on the OP but how many generations in IT is 9 years ?

I'm not a forum hoarder, but I really like GZ. It's all there on the homepage and email alerts. What else is needed? I am on several Yahoo forums for iPad, iPhone, mac support, all are web based, I just get all emails, functional. I am on Macrumour again, fine, just functional. That's fine. GZ is a community and the homepage covers a great deal of NOW, IMHO.
