It would often be very helpful to be able to know a posters general location. Auckland, Hamilton, London, etc.

It's been asked for before. Not sure how far up or down it is on MF's to do list for the site.

I don't think it is advisable.

Why is that?

Privacy and all. Some people rather not disclose location.

What if it was optional?

I don't mind people knowing that I live in Palmerston North. I do however not wish to disclose my full name on here so I don't do that.

I don't think most people would mind putting what city they live in, and as said, leave it optional. Pretty much all other forums I am on allow this option.

An optional tag under your name for "Location" would be ok?

Eg like and adjacent to where I have "Minimalist". Though lots of info isn't very minimalist ;-)

I personally don't think it's a privacy issue. An optional field would be fine.
I'd make it opt in for existing users (to alleviate any privacy concerns), and opt out for any new users.

As has been said, the majority of other forums offer this, and it can be amazingly helpful.

Edit: A quick google search suggests Geekzone probably has more than 1000 posts asking people where they are located.

If I was concerned about that I wouldn't have posted that I was doing the trip. It's about as much risk as having the "my family" stickers on the back of your car.

Having my location under my name wouldn't have changed anything. I said where I was going from and to.

As long as it's a strictly opt-in feature, there shouldn't be a privacy issue.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Opt in is probably okay, as for opt out I dislike opt out features.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Opt in to share city would be fine. Make the field optional in the profile too.

Opt in, just like showing your real name on your profile would be nice.
