I know this is a simple question with a simple answer but my mind is blank right now. I used to be able to view embedded YouTube videos on this computer, now I can't. When I click on it nothing happens. I have checked my extensions and plugins and can't find anything that is getting in the way. I can click through to view the video on YouTube no problem, but I cannot get it to work from inside Geekzone. What am I missing?

I get the window with thumbnail, but it won't play unless I go through to YouTube. No error, just nothing.

I found out a little more. I checked on another computer and the videos I cannot play pop up a message saying they are restricted to certain sites with a link to YouTube. However, on the computer in question I do not see the message or the link, just a blank screen. Another video further down does play correctly.

All videos on that page play fine for me on Chrome, Firefox and IE. Are you still using Opera?

A test with Chrome from the same machine is useful to know if it is the browser or something else. No harm having multiple browsers available for moments like this.

Good point. I still have Opera 12 on that machine though I rarely use it. I get the message and link to YouTube so this is something specific to the Slimjet browser or my setup thereof.

To change the subject completely, I have purposely prevented Slimjet from updating and have also enabled the NPAPI flag and disabled PPAPI in the Flash browser. The reason I did this is because I could not get Flash to work at all on several web sites that I don't want to miss out on. Whether Google likes it or not, a lot of sites still use Flash in this way and there seems to be no other way to view them. This could have to do with the anomalies I experience, but how else am I supposed to make this work? I have tried many other browsers, major and minor, and this is the only one I like.

The thing with this entire problem is you have no idea what caused it. Those sites you say don't work because of npapi - you do not know that is the reason for a particular site or page unless you verify that in latest Chrome*.

Blocking updates you are also blocking updates to the inbuilt plugins, as well as shooting a security size hole in the foot.

*when I say Chrome I mean Chrome not slimjet which is not Chrome. : )

Btw there are portable standalone versions of most browsers very useful if you want a particular version while keeping the main one fully up to date. Different browsers can offen share bookmarks and the like tho I have not tried it for a long time personally.

I'd actually let Slimjet go. Chrome is as secure as possible (as well as Firefox, IE 11 and up). Opera has really moved to be a mobile-first browser. Anything that you don't update is prone to be exploited.

I know you have had problems with Slimjet before, so perhaps it's time to adopt something more modern.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the spirit, especially this time of the year. I have checked out other browsers from time to time, especially Chrome and Firefox, but also some less well-known ones. Chrome to me is like a big, empty hangar. I just hate the lack of controls. Firefox reminds me of Wordperfect back in the bad old days, completely illogical and unintuitive. Every time I have tried it I have come away raging. It just doesn't make sense to me and at my age, I am unwilling to invest the time and energy trying to figure it out.

I absolutely loved Opera 12 and its predecessors. I cannot comprehend how they could have dumped something that elegant. I clung to it as long as possible and felt lost and bereaved when it could not longer cope with modern requirements. I went in search of a replacement and went through several browsers trying to find something I could live with. I just could not stand Firefox or Chrome or the lesser browsers I could find. When I discovered Slimjet, it was like a breath of fresh air. Not quite Opera, but the closest I have come.

I realise all this is very much a matter of personal preference. I am just describing my feelings.

I went through all kinds of crap before I got to this point. It is not like I have not tried other things. I had Slimjet and Flash on auto-update and was perfectly happy with things until half the Flash sites I use stopped working. After a lot of hassle and research I would rather have not had to spend my diminishing energy on, I discovered that the problem had to do with the new! improved! PPAPI Flash version, which was breaking the sites that didn't work. Google's attitude is that it is the problem of these sites and not something that concerns them. But the problem is actually mine and others who want to view these sites. Yes, I wish they would get their act together and move to HTML5 or something that works, but until they do I can't view them at all unless I use these workarounds. So here I am.

The reason I started blocking updates in the first place is because all this happened. Blocking updates was the only way I could stop it from happening. I do wish Flash would have the decency to just disappear. It is an absolute nightmare and I just wish sites would quit using it.

Yeah big part of what I'm saying is use the latest slimjet with default settings and also keep an older version slimjet in portable style just for npapi.

Those vids all play fine in the latest version of Opera 33
