Have just noticed a "Shielded Site" badge popping up on Geekzone pages. Some kind of Women's Refuge thing? I don't think it's my PC since happens on my phone too and only seems to be on GZ pages.

Something new?

yup happening on my phone and pc; not so distracting on the PC but really really annoying on the phone as its so damn tiny and off putting.

Nice move. Trademe have had it for a while. I think the warehouse too?

only thing I would say.... that floating badge is annoying. How about the little icon in the footer instead?

Just started appearing today. It's not in a good location as it's partially covering posts which are linked to.

Yeah, a bit odd and distracting having it up the top, killed it with my adblocker. Most other sites are at the bottom

It is a popup thing that lets people see info about domestic violence and how to get help.

I suppose it instigates that nowhere is safe for these people and they need to hide their activities. Seems very pointless as sure it may not leave a history of going to a specific site but is very apparent if on someones screen.

Anyway, it seems to be another one of those "Rainbow tick" publicity stunt things that organisations put up to try and win all of those humanitarian points.
Not saying this is apparent for GZ, But just more what I have noted. When Trademe and Vodafone did it a few months ago, they raved about it in the media like they are single handedly preventing domestic violence.

I have removed it from mobile. I have added a button to the fotter and removed the sticky overlay on top.

Not to mention it is stupid advice:

"Making A Plan"

Make a safety plan with the guidance of a refuge advocate.
Get yourself a pre-paid phone; keep it charged and safe.
Keep photocopies of important documents (passport, birth certificate, bank account details, medical notes, driver's licence, etc) and store these at the home of a supportive friend or family member.
Keep a journal of all violent incidents, noting dates and events.
If you can, open your own bank account and try to save some money.
If you have pets you are worried about, consider them in your safety plan.

More like "how to get yourself killed by a psycho".

How about "call the Police IMMEDIATELY" ??

That way protection orders can be put in place, victim support and refuge services arranged etc.

This normalisation of domestic violence and distrust of Police is unhelpful to both victims and the service providers trying to support them.

Fortunately I've never been the victim of family violence, Had a few very deserved lengthy hidings from my dad back in the day that would be considered violence now but back then it was fairly earnt.. I am not stabbing at your for putting it up, it has a good incentive behind it and you don't stand to gain anything commercially, just made a side comment re commercial outfits who have used it to show how amazing they and taking advantage of a common social issue in NZ. Thats all...

I do not see this as safe advice either, would leave very clear traces that you are upto something, Isn't the whole point of a "Shielded Site" to hide the fact you are trying to get out and do something? Creating bank accounts, saving money, taking copies of ID, keeping a phone would be very oblivious if you are living under a controlling and possibly violent person. Generally people lose the ability to have their own thoughts when living under oppression so this would be a huge step for them to take and I feel most won't. It is a tricky social issue and I can't solve it here but the basis of that shielded site is flawed.

May want to add cursor: pointer; to its style. So it looks clickable when mouse is over it. At the moment it looks like a static image.

Depends on how relevant it is to the person reading. I've watched someone walk in those shoes.
I have never personally been the victim and I don't want to relate it to this but I do know a family who has gone through this with a son/(brother to my friend) who just got out of jail and I can tell you straight up and down right here right now if they did half of what that list says they could be a lot worse off.
