I get a message that the forum is down for maintenance while trying to read a PM from China.

I switch to using an illegal vpn, and the forum comes up.

Surely there are easier ways to protect the forum than blocking a range of IP addresses which I assume is happening.

Seems a rather blunt tool. If the CCP don't like you they just add your site to their firewall. They can block sites even with VPN use.

Surely there are more sophisticated ways of doing this?

I doubt there is a business case for spending any more on doing anything more than blocking the whole country.

And the reasonable counter-point is that the folks on this board are likely to have enough savvy about them to use third party down detection services and/or a VPN.

We transferred flights in China and a VPN was essential. When we got delayed and missed our connection a VPN was the only way I could send a message to my parents we were going to visit to tell them what flight we'd been put on instead.

We still block quite a few thousands rogue requests from China. Those are the government as some of you imply. It is juat badly written search bots that at peak were doing a few hundred requests per second.

We are not in the business of serving robots.

I have a client who goes to China a few times a year, and hes never had any issues connecting to anything, so never offered him a VPN. Maybe it depends on the hotels you stay in.....  :)

I'm staying in Xinjiang which has even tighter electronic security than the rest of China.

What I don't understand is if you think it's a badly written bot problem why put a message to say that the site is down for maintenance?

I think that's the standard response on CF when blocking something...

It's giving the bots more AI credit than they warrant!
