I just did some calculations comparing the total cost of ownership for buying an iphone 32gb 3GS on a 24 month iphone plan. I'm really surprised at the huge price difference between NZ and Australia, even when you account for the exchange rate. It makes me want to move to Australia.
------------------------------------------------------------
Australian Vodafone ($79 plan)
$0 Upfront +$79 / month (24mo) = 1896 AUD = $2,340 NZD
Unlimited calls to australian vodafone mobies
Unlimited txt/pxt to national & international #s
1GB / month data
Plus
$550 credit / month to spend on the following
50c / additional MB = 1100 MB
or 120c / min phone calls (+35c flag fall) = 87 x 5 min phone calls (~435 min)
------------------------------------------------------------
New Zealand Vodafone ($40 plan)
$899 Upfront + $40 / month (24mo) = $1859
30 minutes
300 txt (National only, no PXT)
250MB / month
New Zealand Vodafone ($80 plan)
$799 Upfront + $80 / month (24mo) = $2719
120 minutes
600 txt (National only, no PXT)
250MB / month
New Zealand Vodafone ($250 plan)
$299 Upfront + $250 / month (24mo) = $6299
600 minutes
600 TXT (National only, no PXT)
1GB / Month
------------------------------------------------------------
I think the australian plan is most similar to the $250 NZ plan
So total cost: Australian plan = $2340 'vs' New Zealand plan = $6299
or per month: $97.50 'vs' $262.50
I actually prefer the Australian plan, because I can go over the 1GB of data
and it includes unlimited pxts and unlimited international txts and unlimited VF->VF calls.
------------------------------------------------------------
If you compare the two cheapest plans including the phone purchase price
Australia ($79AUD) plan = $97.50 / month
Vodafone ($40) plan = $77.50 / month
So your paying an extra $20, but you are getting about 10x more value
