I know, I know, Reddit is often down. But this time it's not. Everyone I know can access it except me.

I usually get odd PHP errors which seem to be on their server ("ZERO SIZE OBJECT" and "The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.") after a long period of "waiting for www.reddit.com" but sometimes it's simply a Chrome error (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.)

I'm on Telstra Cable in Christchurch. Also, it seems to happen mostly at night from about 10pm. During the day I rarely ever get any errors.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a caching issue...?
What happens if you try using different DNS servers, like Google's 8.8.8.8 ?
Or even a different web browser?

Yes, I notice this every morning when I get up (~6am) that reddit is inaccessible directly.

As soon as I pop myself through a SSH Tunnel (traffic still comes from New Zealand) it works fine.

TelstraClear's proxies are obviously pretty broken once again.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Yeah exact same issue for me too on TCL ADSL. Havent actually tried a change in DNS as I wasnt too fussed at the time - was starting to notice the same pattern though.

I changed to Google's DNS servers and it was still broken. I also tried changing browsers, clearing cache and flushing DNS cache. Didn't help.

It works fine now that it's morning but it will probably break again tonight...

Gosh, I had joined geekzone just to post this problem, thinking I was the only one.

I have had the same issues with reddit.com as well. However this morning I pinged it to find that its goes through OK, therefore it has to be a cache issue. I tried to contact the help guys, but they have been no help at all. I guess we can only wait......

It's definitely the proxy cache(s), bypassing TelstraClear International makes it work fine, which I do at home in the morning now.

I know of a few inroads to TCL, I'll try asking down those paths.

That'd be great. It's pretty damn annoying. Late at night is when I need Reddit the most.

Same problem here, early in the morning when I get up (6 - 7 am) and very early if I haven't gone to bed yet (2 am ish). TCL cable in Christchurch.

Gary, is there an easy way to report this?

Historically I have had the issue of sites not loading like this for years, with different sites. There doesn't seem to be any way to make the people on the help desk, probably ensconced somewhere in India, understand what the problem is.

Can we bypass the cache, or flush it?

Hi again. This is from the tech team:

We apologise that you have not been able to log a fault for the particular cases you raise.

To ensure that your case is logged we recommend:

-          The faults team need traceroutes and also ping tests to the domain when you’re having problems.

-          Also dates and times when it was unavailable.

-          Ask the agent for a Case number. TelstraClear references are T(7) digits.

Normally with these types of issues you will be given an email addresses to send the information to. The email should have the reference number T(7) in the subject field and the results from the traceroutes etc in the email body.

Still no change, its really easy to find the problem, its every morning, up to 9am+. All I am getting is an old cached page, and it fails totally when you try to access any subpage.

On one hand its annoying, on the other its a cold turkey cure for your reddit addiction.

Also, as usual, I'd like people to report these things in our faults page as well (www.geekzone.co.nz/fault.asp)... Even though that reporting is not an official ISP log, I'm pretty sure the more we load there, the better for the community...
