Probably a few years away if the time it took for rural Band 28 4G to become a thing here is any indication. To be honest I can't really see the networks investing a lot into rural 5G coverage where 4G isn't even close to exhausting capacity. They'll probably add capacity to 4G (by adding additional higher band carriers e.g. 1800/2100/2300/2600 to take on demand nearer the tower) before they consider 5G deployments. Only rural 5G deployments I foresee in the next few years will be town centre sites and possibly COW sites for big events. Happy to be proved wrong but just going by what has happened in the past this seems the most likely scenario.

Not sure if it needed its own thread  but looks like eSIM is coming with 5G in Mid 2020 - https://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile/esim/

"As part of our 5G ecosystem rollout, we will integrate eSIMs for eligible mobile devices. We’re expecting to have this functionality available on Pay Monthly plans from mid 2020 onwards."

Not sure if it's intentional or not, but the aforementioned page actually has an Apple Watch in the hero image, so... maybe around the same time?

Still can't use mine on Spark as Digital doesn't even have regular eSIM yet (so ya know, glass houses & all).

I have been using a Samsung A90 5G for a couple of weeks - not as my main drive but testing around different spots. These were collected this morning, but pretty much represent my experience other times:

Thorndon Quay by stadium:

A bit further down Thorndon Quay:

Lambton Quay in front of Vodafone St:

Recording a speed test on 4G and 5G side by side on The Terrace top of Woodward St (around the corner from Vodafone store):

A reminder, at launch we got speeds up to 500 Mbps+ inside the Vodafone store on Lambton Quay. Note the server is Sydney - the servers used above were all Vodafone Wellington.

BarTender: Looks like 5G is all smokes and mirrors. ;)

personally i seriously disagree with the rather unscientific way of the side by side test was  done...

but this is exactly what was expected based on NZ only having very limited midband for 5G. until mmwave is used and we start seeing 100mhz channels, you wont see the 1gbit speeds...

Yes, it was unscientific. We were having a coffee and decided to test. But you don't ask John Doe on the street to perform speed tests only under ideal conditions, do you?

No but it's more the way it blows up on the likes of twitter, creates a perception that certain groups would latch onto as evidence as to why it's not needed.

In reality I just want a geeky play with it really though but am too cheap to buy a flagship device that has such limited bands ;)

Interesting discussion with someone just now. Looking at those screenshots, and according to the Samsung manual here:

Note that some tests show the 5G connection with LTE usage - but during the test could've been 5G (especially the 200 Mbps test)...

I look at it slightly differently.
If you're making all this marketing noise about 5G and it's all just marketing spin... Then I get grumpy.
