One thing I found interesting though, is that speeds to Apple's trailer website (http://www.apple.com/trailers) or for that matter almost any Apple website is blazingly fast!  I could download any trailers QuickTime movie or even itunes setup (50+MB) at speeds in excess of 5mbps, which amazes me.

Wonder why..?

Akamai?

Thanks for this.  I did wonder about it but just can't be sure..!

Anyway, I'm not complaining (at least with regards to the speeds I get to Apple's websites and stuff! Laughing

Thanks everyone for the speedtests. Is there anyone using a different ISP that could post as well?

I've found that Apple downloads (Software Update etc) have always been fast with Xnet, I'm sure it Akamai too.

Results to LA always seems to be around this level & are slightly higher to Auckland. I'm on FS/FS, Attainable/Line Rate D/U are 8200/6200, 1025/1025, attenuation 37dB (which should give me higher attainable, but that's another story), Interleave off.

I live in Plimmerton and always get 4200 plus any time of day to Auckland.
But LA is another matter. At peak times it is around 400. At 3pm just now it is 615 (JUST keeps Youtube buffer in credit).

PS How do you guys get 6000 plus local? Maybe my distance to the exch is longer?

Well it certainly helps being closer to the exchange ;-) I can't get 6000+ local, well not on speed test's anyway, but a couple of things you can do locally is make sure you've got a good modem (not a Dlink), and make sure you've got as best as possible cable from the the ETP (where the Telecom wire enters the house) to your modem - Cat 5e is best. These things do help.

Ping the domain you're downloading from. If the IP starts with 58.28, it's an Akamai at Xnet.

Not great either:

3Mbps sync speed. Maybe it was a bad night on the exchange, but her connection has always felt slower than mine.

Look at my speeds to the US from the UK.

So even here in the Uk we get crap speeds.

I've seen you say this quite a few times now.. but what relevance does it have? You get crap speeds out in the middle of nowhere too, but you don't get crap speeds in Japan. It just has nothing to do with the situation at hand.

Where does the bulk of Japanese internet content come from?
Where does the bulk of New Zealand internet content come from?

Answer that and you've answered your question. Hint: It is much easier to improve local traffic speeds than international.

My point wasn't really meant for that kind of thought at all, I was just trying to make the point that it doesn't really matter if internet in the UK/Japan/US/Middle East is fast or slow, we live in New Zealand and the speed of the internet here is what this topic is about.

I guess I just worded my previous post wrong.

Very good point, and something I constantly have to correct people on when comparing NZ (or Australia) to Japan, Korea, and even Scandinavia.

The language creates a community-of-interest, where traffic stays local.  In Japan, 95% of their traffic stays within Japan and only 5% comes internationally - and often from countries which are close (Korea, China) rather than the US/Europe.  In New Zealand, over 92% is sourced internationally, which is rather expensive.

Yeah... great speeds we have on 6th of April 2008 at 8:02pm, not that its any different at 4am or 1pm, just a constant crap service.
I regret switching from GoLarge to this. Atleast with GoLarge you could view youtube.com, with this shocking service you cant even do that.
I'm going to recommend people go to Orcon or Xtra, because anything is better than this pathetic excuse for "boardband".

Woopy I can surf websites hosted in NewZealand really fast... to bad no bloody websites are hosted here that anyone visits.
