Way way back in the day (around 2001) I used to have one of the cable TV decoders that pre-dated the T-Box. I guess these aren't any good anymore eh?

From memory those things were worth quite a bit ($1000 each if memory serves), must have cost TCL/Vodafone a fortune to get rid of them all! I don't even remember what brand/model they were. @ZollyMonsta I think you were at Saturn and TCL eh? You know the ones I mean? I think I still have a remote that accidentally got packed away for one of them somewhere!

If you're talking 2001, you're probably referring to the old Jerrold or General Instruments analog set top boxes. I also had those back around 2000, and I've been a TV customer with Saturn, TelstraSaturn, TelstraClear, Vodafone customer the whole way along. The analog channels have been gone from the cable for many years now. After that there was an irdeto DVB-C set top box, then the T-Box, then the current VodafoneTV.

That sounds familiar. When did they get rid of them? Note that I haven't had cable TV for quite some time.

Back in the days of Analogue Cable TV, there was three different models.

The Jerrold 7000 series ( I think there may have been a 2000 series also)

The General Instruments 2200

The Motorola 3300 (Can't find an image)

Then Digital came along (off the canned planned satellite platform launch)

ADB iCAN-3000 MHP Digital Decoder

The first one is the one I had. Memories! I guess they're absolutely no use now eh. I recall being told they were worth around $1200 each at the time, although I may have that figure wrong (happy to be corrected). The second one looks familiar too - although I never had one of those.

Not sure on that price lol.

The first one had only mono sound I believe. The 2200 had nicam stereo, but only via RF (even though it had left/right audio jacks). The 3300 brought stereo on the output jacks, however it was terrible for interference in the video.

My wife and I attended customer focus meetings at Saturn at their establishment on the Petone Esplanade the building now occupied by Wellington Electricity. So long ago now, so sad that Vodafone wrecked it.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I agree, Paradise was a great place to work, Telstra Saturn was okay too. Telstra Clear? Forget it. That (in my eyes) is about the time when things got really wrecked.

I had forgotten about Paradise.net. I was a customer once upon a time.

If you are referring to this building then a wrecking ball has been taken to it due to damage from the Kaikoura Quake

We had the first one for years.

Not that I would have done it... but I know it was totally possible to enable all the channels with a small external box sitting inline on the cable connection 😗 (it was called a "cube", and had cable in + cable out F connectors, and a couple of buttons to help you find the device identifier, it would replace the addressing signals set to the set top box and set them all to enabled).

I remember when I worked at TCL, the number of people wanting to connect their own cable TV decoders and cable modems...it was quite an eye-opener at the time.

Today people supply their own router etc and no one bats an eyelid (although you can't supply your own ONT for fibre as well 😄)
