@Jmacg: Other users with multiple ISP's have confirmed TCL YouTube streaming performance is worse. @Technies response proves that TCL-specific DNS settings do affect performance.

@Technie: Thanks for your post. I tested the alternative DNS settings & found YouTube improved (at times by a lot, at other times by a little). As Freitasm and yourself mentioned above, Facebook goes from perfect, to barely operational when using the public DNS setting. Look forward to seeing your helpdesk ticket updates.

@Freitasm: This issue has been occurring for longer than a month.

I've never held a particular torch for TCL and have always been amazed at their repeated successes in ISP user satisfaction surveys - to the extent that I've even wondered if they've found a way to skew the polls. For a long time, while they were getting such good publicity, I was experiencing short periods where I couldn't connect with TCL, or for periods during an evening I would lose my connection, then get it back a few minutes or an hour or so later. I knew other people in Wellington had the same problems and thought that TCL's polling successes must be based on votes from Chch or Kapiti.

I actually pointed out the disconnect between the poll results and actual performance in Wellington to Tom Pullar-Strecker of Infotech Weekly, but he wasn't interested.

Now we have the streaming video issue, I think the best way to get TCL to sort things out, and even spend somemoney to do it, may be to shame them into it. Via the media. It's a pity that the ICT media has shut up shop for the holidays. But once they are back on deck, it would be timely to alert them to the problem. Things to do with YouTube are reasonable sexy as far as media are concerned, and if this can be linked to particularly poor performance from the company that always seems to win the customer satisfaction polls, there might be some interest.

Can I make an irrelevant observation; this isn't twitter, nor Facebook.  Why @tag people when you're addressing them?  Pointless. Unless this is some uber-modern twist on netiquette i've not kept up with?

Idle on-topic observation: My limited Youtube use over the last couple of days has been somewhat improved. Still in wait-and-see mode however.

Not better... Just back in Wellington and it stutters, pause, buffers every few seconds...

Iam trying to watch this video and it played fine until 1:20. Then it stopped every second for 15 seconds. After this it's playing ok, but the buffer indicator never quite goes much ahead of the player indicator.

I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but it seems to me in the last week that performance has gotten a lot better. It's been quite a while now I think about it since I saw a buffering video.

Anyone else think it's gotten better, or just me?

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

It is better. Still buffering on longer videos though.

This continues to be a problem... Aren't TelstraClear ever move to solve this?

It spells disrespect for their customers.
