I rang the TCL retail store and they said they had a unit on display last week but the power outage broke it. They are hoping to get it back working by the end of the week.

You're saying that the power outage broke the unit? that's unfortunate, but maybe fortunate for us if they can look at it.
I haven't heard yet whether there was a surge or not that broke other things

Am I the only one who is cynical about this response from TCL? What are the chances that the one bit of equipment that we all want to see - gets damaged by the power outage - maybe it's a lesson to us all to have surge protection!

Why will it take until the end of this week to get it fixed? Are they seriously telling us that there are no others in the country that they can swap it with? If that's the case - it doesn't bode well for a national roll-out. So either this is another excuse or demand is significantly going to outstrip supply.

Did anyone actually get to see it? It would be good to get a real opinion on its capability and operation.

That's a bit like 'the dog ate my homework', so one got fried by the power cut/surge and they didn't have a single one to replace it?

If so then how (un)likely is it they have any even near ready for shipping to customers?

The unofficial information that I heard was that the firmware on the device is still buggy and a staff member did something they weren't suppose to, which broke it. So perhaps the power outage is a convenient excuse, or perhaps it added to the problems. The guy I spoke to mentioned that they are hoping for a mid-May release - and I've heard this from other sources too - but I won't believe it until i have the PVR in my lounge.

I wouldn't blame TelstraClear for the firmware.

The software is developed by Digisoft but that's just the (Java) application if I understand correctly.
The hardware (and firmware) comes from someone else. So I would blame the supplier.
I don't think TelstraClear should mess with the firmware, have they got anybody who's capable of doing it?

By 'firmware' I was really referring to any of the software/firmware/middleware running on the box.

Interestingly the box has a low voltage DC input to it (according to the photos on Facebook) - not being an electronics engineer, would a power surge still break the equipment or just the adapter?

Either way if it was bricked because of a power surge or firmware/software tampering - it makes it sound flakey at best. I really don't want to go to SKY but at least their equipment is stable. I would be quite upset if I couldn't watch the footie because of the box and a lack of support when it packed up.

I've had three analogue decoders die during power pole upgrade work, so I can well believe the PVR could die during a power outage.

I'm also running my JCMatthew Freeview decoder on composite video leads because proximity to the current Telstra analogue decoder causes audio drop out when connecting it via HDMI cable.
