Antonios is right, I believe.

I've just done the change and the T-boxes will be swapped out in May (we have one with the LOT of content we want to get through; there was no pressure for this to be earlier). The only problem was that this delayed install was, it seems, not communicated to Downer. There was a wee plethora of calls and texts. But, a quick call to Downer and that was sorted - I just need to call them when I'm ready. This is something that Vodafone should look at - the disconnect will create a lot of angst for some people.

The deal offered to stay with VF, rather than move to other options (I had researched them and knew the costs), was very good and the agent was very helpful. New price seems to be in effect already despite us still using the old T-boxes, and an Ultrahub turned up day after the call.

Hope that's useful.

I guess we'll find out on friday. That's when the change is happening - two t-boxes for 2 vtv boxes. Landline disconnected. And hopefully my gig internet continuing to work without needing a router swap. I even get to consolidate this stuff to one location and have less visible wires.

Oddly enough, no ultrahub for me. I've never had one, and the HG659 I've got which is ancient now is there only as backup to the backup.

And now for the most chilling situation... i will be at work, and the home army will be supervising the swap - and there are two birthday parties over the weekend.

Friday cutover. HCIO away. Non techies on site.

What could possibly go wrong?

Didn't know I was getting one. Seems that they're treating the swap as being a new customer - guess the new account number automatically triggers the send. It just turned up. You may end up with a backup to the backup to the backup :-)

Finally got my letter from Vodafone. Waiting for a telephone call to arrange a date. Have told the other person in the house to hurry up and watch the stored programmes ( I very rarely watch TV).

The house has two modems connected to the cable network. One is a Surfboard SB5101 connected to the old T box in one room and in another room a Cisco DPC3008 is connected to my own Asus1900 router (which is then connected to my desktop via Cat 6 cable and also with a patch cable to Synology 918+ NAS). Also the network is wired into the old Telecom internal telephone system where the Telecom system enters the house. A 2 handset wireless base station is plugged into one old telecom socket.

Will the Cisco modem be replaced as well? I want to keep my Asus router as it has worked rock solid.

Chorus did a free install of fibre so I am ready if the Vodafone change does not work out.

Thanks

You will have to forgo your landline for that because the landline will come off Vodafone’s own ultrahub

Thanks

That is sad.

Is the Ultrahub a marketing name for a router?

How good are they?

If you want a phone line and use your own router then port your number to 2talk or Hero and get a Grandstream or yealink ata and divorce yourself from any isp dependency.

@Tatou — you can still use your current landline handset with the upgrade, main difference is that your phone is routed through the Internet via the Ultra Hub instead of the copper network.

See Connecting your Homeline for how your landline might be set-up. I've gone for Option 3: Integrated wiring so all our jackpoints are still usable.

See Ultra Hub modem | Step-by-step guides for more info about the device + specs.

I wanted to keep my own router ASUS 1900 - rock sold and trouble free for years with the Synology NAS and Desktop.

I need to decide

1 whether to keep the landline

2 If so keep with Vodafone ( lose ASUS ) but probably keep competitive pricing

3 or go alternative VOIP with 2talk or Hero (as suggested)  and keep ASUS

Just a question

I assume that the Vodafone Cisco Modem that is currently connected to the router won't be replaced. It is the Surboard Modem that is connected to the T box that will be replaced with something. There are two cables going from the Grey box on the outside of the house. One goes to the Surboard Modem by the TV and other one goes to another room through a wall to the router modem.

IS there a diagram anywhere that would show what a layout would look like in my situation when things are changed. All the info seems to assume you are connecting to something like a Chorus ONT

Hi, pretty sure the Cisco modem is only DOCSIS3.0 not 3.1, so I would expect its replaced, but could well be wrong. The old Surboard is off to the bin, as with the T-box, the T-box will be replaced with the VTV that will use unicast traffic off the internet via the new internet connection (ie DOCSIS3.1)

IS there a diagram anywhere that would show what a layout would look like in my situation when things are changed. All the info seems to assume you are connecting to something like a Chorus ONT

in simple terms:

1. Technicolor4400 for gig cable internet, or an ONT from chorus for fibre, goes into:

2. Your own router supporting tagged packet support (vlan10), or the Vodafone ultra hub if you have voice support ordered. Either should be fine for internet only, but voice support comes from the back of the voda hub only.

3. Vodafone does not support giving you the VoIP login credentials to setup your own VoIP kit, and while a few people have figured out how to turn the hub into the biggest ata ever and use it with their own router, it’s a diy setup and something the installer will probably not help you with. Hence why some people here go to 2talk or hero.

Other options:

1. Hamish has said integrated wiring is being offered, this means enabling the voice port on the ultra hub to be connected to the voice wiring in your house. The old Vodafone voice wiring connection will be disconnected from the street pole. I imagine in-house is similar to the chorus offering, which was a new connection box, connected into the back of your phone master socket. Voice out from the hub goes into this new box, and in turn you can leave your current phones connected.

No idea how many analogue phones can be connected to it, but I imagine there is a real limit.

2. the VTV box can either connect via Ethernet cable to your hub, via your own switch if you like, and uses hdmi to connect to the TV. Or you can use 5ghz wifi instead, although a few people have reported stability issues when using the wet noodle that is radio. Normal issues apply around your house construction and distance between boxes etc. you might need to get the wifi range extenders voda is pushing!

3. limit of 2 vtv boxes in this setup if you want to have sky subscription. No idea if the mobile app can also be used. The standalone VTV offer has a different pricing regime and limits.

does this help?
