100% it will never be economically viable, but One's (and 2d for that matter) coverage is quite behind Spark's. They are building out towers like nobody's business so it may only be a matter of time before they are all on par.

It really does depend on the area. I swap between all 3 carriers every year or so and Spark in my experience are the one catching up in the places I frequent (mostly Auckland/Northland/Waikato). One/2deg is building out new sites and upgrading existing sites at a consistent pace and Spark not so much outside of their 5G upgrade programme. To be fair all three get a boost from the RCG towers -- to the point I don't think there's many new rural towers being built by the 3 carriers anyway. Spark may still the best carrier in a slowly decreasing list of certain areas (Pukekohe and SH1 between Auckland and Hamilton are two of my bugbears with 2deg/One coverage) but the days of them being the best carrier in every part of NZ is long gone. But their reputation remains!

Parts of Northland, especially the Hokianga, as well as the East Cape - One has it sewn up. But having used One/Voda a couple of years ago, and traveling around the country, there were times I wanted to throw my phone out the window when people on Spark had flawless coverage. As I said, One seem to building out their network quite a bit, so it's probably not too far away where all telcos are much of a muchness

My iPhone had its first experience with Satellite today while traveling up the Napier-Taupo Highway and SH1 (South Waikato). When using CarPlay instead of showing 3/4G it shows “SAT” with 1 and at times 2 bars of coverage.

Press release:

One NZ opens satellite texting to customers north of Hamilton

With impacts from Cyclone Tam being felt around the country, and particularly in Northland and Auckland currently, One NZ is opening its One NZ Satellite service to more customers located north of Hamilton.

Due to the storm and power outages, some mobile cell sites are not operating in the North. While all One NZ cell sites have battery back-up, some mobile services are limited.

The One NZ Satellite service delivered in partnership with SpaceX enables One NZ customers with a VoLTE-capable roaming device the ability to send and receive text messages at no extra charge.

This means most 4G and all 5G phones can access basic messaging (SMS), and you check your device eligibility here: https://one.nz/our-networks/volte/

Joe Goddard, One NZ Enterprise & Commercial Director, says: “This satellite-based text service offers another communication channel and will enable more One NZ customers to send or receive basic text messages during the storm

“This means they could text a loved one and ask them to call 111 or emergency services if needed, and if they are in an area where traditional mobile or connectivity networks are disrupted.

“We urge New Zealanders to charge your phones now, and be prepared in case the weather situation gets worse.”

Customers will know if they have connected to One NZ Satellite Service, as the network banner will show ‘One NZ SpaceX’.

For more information about the service, please visit: https://one.nz/why-choose-us/satellite/

I think most 4G phones are technically capable, but I suspect they prefer to enable this via software update to tested and approved devices only. If you let any phone do it, then you may get issues like phones getting stuck on Space-X only etc., not able to make calls and possibly other weird things.

I have tested One NZ’s satellite texting quite a few times now, it works great. One thing I am a bit puzzled about though is it uses iMessage. I have just been texting someone who is using it, I have the blue bubble, the delivered and read receipts and the tying icon when they are replying.

On this occasion I am the one using cellular and they are using the sat service but I have tried it the other way to and got the same result, full use of iMessage over satellite.

I was skeptical at first thinking it might have reverted to 1 bar of cellular but I have triple checked and tested multiple times now and it does indeed use iMessage when going iPhone to iPhone.

From my testing I THINK but can't be sure it uses imessage if you are sending a message to somebody using an existing imessage conversation if composing to somebody you have never imessaged before it goes to SMS (Green bubble)

Could be wrong but using imessage over Sat is an apple feature? Not the spacex text messaging

Yes I see that Apple offer it but that service is not available in NZ

I'm using One NZ’s satellite texting.

iMessage uses data but One NZ’s satellite texting does not do data so I'm a bit confused about it all, even tried loading a web page to see if data was on which it wasn't.

As I say though I've now had quite a few full imessage exchanges using One NZ’s satellite texting, blue bubble, delivered and read receipts and also the typing animation.

It's great you can use iMessage, I'm just a bit puzzled how.

Hi all, I'm wondering if others are having a similar issue after connection to starlink. I've noticed this everytime my phone has connected and used starlink... once I in an area where I should have coverage I find my Mobile Data is off, and trying to switch it back on I get the message "No SIM Inserted". The only way to fix this is a phone restart or SIM Manager and turn the SIM off/on.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

OS up to date

Cheers 😊

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

I haven't experienced that on S23 or S25.

My phone received a LARGE update (5.5GB) on the weekend that seems to have resolved my issue... My trip into the wilderness yesterday had no issue.
