so how could you explain about the sim cards sold in retail stores?
surf TRADEME you would see sim cards are selling for over 100$ for GOLD prepaid numbers.
while it retails for $29.95, i guess the retail store stuff are keeping the good numbers to themself and selling them on TRADEME to make a big of profit?

BaaaaD: I have done some research.

To obtain  90$ off a brand new iphone 32gb white/black.

iPhone 32gb wiht out a contract retails at $1379

Why not do this save $90,

1. Go on a $40 plan, pay $899
2. Disconnect the plan early termination a fee of $350
So total would only be $1289 rather than paying $1379

The advantage are:
save $90 and get free all the benefit for the 1st month of the $40 plan.

disadvantage: it might consume most of your time, ringing and waiting waiting for the contract to be cancel.

Questions, is the phone unlock? if i follow this process will i be able to pop in prepaid sim card and shold boot up with no problems? How about a XT network card.

I said I also was interested in this idea earlier in the thread But I asked VodafoneNZ on twitter about the chance of a subsidy penalty:
@VodafoneNZ Is there a subsidy penalty if you break from your contract within the first 3 months?
@targetlocated yes there is.

Not sure what the penalty is, or where it states there is a penalty.

PaulBrislen: They're the only ones in the world (that I know of - happy to be corrected) that are unlocked.

I'm pretty sure the ones sold in Hong Kong are unlocked. In fact, Apple even sells them on the online store.

From the page: "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

Apple Australia (who supplies us?) is selling them factory unlocked from their retail stores.  Clearly the T&C are internal to Vodafone, not a mandate from Apple.

Just as a point of interest, those of you planning the Vodafone for three months and then cancelling plan may need to be aware that number portability could be an issue...

When I tried to break my VF iPhone contract to move to XT I had to hold off until a certain period, otherwise I would have forfeited my number. The explanation was that I was cancelling my contract and therefore lost entitlement to the number. This may have been some spin to try and hold on to customers, but the manager seemed very definite!

Guess I could have pursued it further - but we all know what VF customer service is like. In the end I held out for a another month before moving to XT with my 021 number. The best change I ever made. iPhone on XT is the way to go.

Was also hoping to go and buy the handset from the store - seems like a bit of a dumb move on VF's part. And the justification of Paul Brislen doesn't hold up. Many countries sell unlocked iPhones as pointed out above.

Why not just limit to one unit per customer in store?

Anyhow, fingers crossed for XT tomorrow and also Magnum Mac ...

I won't apologise for doing what we need to do to stop people buying these things and shipping them offshore. It's that simple - this is a practice that is outside the T&C for buying an iPhone from us and we will work to make it as difficult as possible for those that want to do it

Paul that is nothing but a smokescreen. There are ways to achieve that end without blocking out-of-contract sales in-store. All you need is a one-unit limit in stores as well as online. The real motivation here is to stop your toys being shared with a certain other network and we all know it. Stop talking garbage, your corporate PR spin does not wash with us.

Found something alright. If you sing up to iPhone 40.
iPhone for $899 + $350 early disconnection fee = 1249. So you save a bit but may have to pay the first $40 still

And aren't these plans exactly the same as the last ones?

Arnies you're a bit late to this party. Go through the thread -- that's been discussed already.

What "Manager"? Vodafone or Telecom?

When you port your number you do it through the telco receiving the number. The telco you are leavingt have no say on this. They have to honour the port request - provided you're on time with your payments, etc. The number is not "yours" but you should be able to take with you regardless.

Just to clarify:

1) iPhone is sold unlocked in Brazil as well, by multiple operators (law in Brazil prohibits carrier locking);
2) People that just buy the phone here and send it somewhere else would still pay full RRP for it, so I don't see why being able to sell the phone at full price is a bad thing for you guys.

Do you have to be a Vodafone customer to buy phones from their online store? If anybody can make online purchase, I can't see how this will stop XT users buying one online themselves.

Tohe: Looks like I was mistaken, should cost you nothing... Here
Looks like they only charge if you are in the first 6 months of your contract, which you are, but going by this matrix, it looks like you pay nothing anyway!

I did look and which is why I got quite confused. :-/ They should have a widget/wizard to help someone to work out what's the best and how much it will cost.

This was the manager at Vodafone - Northlands mall, Christchurch.

I though at the time it wasn't correct - but he explained as a cancellation - therefore no rights to the number. Sort of made sense, but as I said, I could have pursued it but couldn't face hours on hold.

Posted here just as a point of interest, and those considering buying the phone with plan and then cancelling may need clarification around this. My account was all in good standing.

I think you may be right - but as others have said (including you) if you cancel with Vodafone before requesting the port with the new provider, your number is at risk!!!

Thanks
